As a long-time gaming enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of the industry over the past few decades, I must say that this potential acquisition of Kadokawa by Sony is nothing short of exhilarating news! If you’ve ever played any FromSoftware game or marveled at the captivating stories in anime produced by Kadokawa, you’d understand why this deal could be a game-changer.
As a passionate gaming enthusiast, it’s undeniable that Sony and Microsoft stand tall as titans in the current gaming landscape. They’ve both been actively snapping up top-tier development studios, aiming to secure coveted exclusive games that make our gaming experiences truly special.
As a devoted gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but notice that Sony seems to be reigning supreme when it comes to exclusive games. Yet, there’s a tantalizing whisper in the gaming community that Sony might be gearing up to secure a monumental Intellectual Property (IP) for PlayStation, potentially tipping the scales even further in their favor.
Sony Wants to Buy Kadokawa
According to reports from Reuters, negotiations are taking place between Sony and Kadokawa regarding Sony potentially buying Kadokawa. VGC has received confirmation that Kadokawa has issued a statement concerning these rumored discussions. In their statement, they mention:
As a passionate follower, I’ve come across various pieces discussing the potential acquisition of Kadokawa Corporation by Sony Group Inc. Here’s what I’ve gathered so far…
Although the Company hasn’t officially declared anything yet, they’ve received a preliminary agreement to purchase their shares. No final decision has been made as of now. Should there be any updates worth sharing, we’ll ensure to announce them promptly and appropriately when necessary.
What Does Kadokawa Own?
Kadokawa Corporation, a prominent media brand, boasts multiple game developers and anime studios under its umbrella. Among them, Dwango, another subsidiary of Kadokawa, has Spike Chunsoft as one of its assets, the creators of “Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero”. More recently, they’ve added Acquire to their portfolio, a studio famous for developing the popular “Octopath Traveller” video games.
Indeed, it’s studio FromSoftware, a well-known brand under majority ownership by Kadokawa, that has everyone talking about this upcoming acquisition. This company is renowned for popularizing the Souls-like genre and boasts a range of hit titles such as Dark Souls, Demon Souls, Armored Core, Bloodborne, and their latest masterpiece, Elden Ring.

If Sony were to purchase Kadokawa, there’s a chance that future FromSoft games might only be available on PlayStation systems – a development that could disappoint fans of the Soulslike modding communities.
It’s possible that they could employ some of the anime studios that Kadokawa owns to create animated series based on their current intellectual properties. The success of “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” for CDPR has shown us what can be achieved, so think about a “God of War” anime or even a mini-series for “Astro Bot”.
Still in Talks
To clarify, Kadokawa Corporation has acknowledged receiving a letter expressing Sony’s interest, but there have been no substantial discussions or agreements finalized as of yet. Despite the current state of negotiations, numerous figures within the industry believe that Kadokawa stands to benefit significantly from any potential partnership with Sony.
Following whispers about negotiations surfacing, it’s been reported that Kadokawa’s stock price climbed by an impressive 23%, reaching a fresh all-time high for the corporation.

While Sony has been successful with exclusive games, there’s an argument that it can be more advantageous for game studios to create cross-platform titles. Even popular exclusives like “The Last of Us” and “Horizon” have been making their way onto PC in recent years, suggesting that FromSoftware games might not need to remain exclusive to PlayStation.
Then again, fans will just have to wait and see what happens.
