PlayStation's 30th Anniversary: 5 Best PS4 Games

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that these five games have truly left an indelible mark on my gaming journey. Each one offers a unique and immersive experience that transports players to different worlds and eras.

We’ve moved into the advanced era of video games. Although there haven’t been massive visual improvements beyond occasional frame rate enhancements to 30 or 60fps, the PlayStation 4 continues to shine as a top-notch console. Contrary to expectations of underperformance, it has experienced an unprecedented success since its debut in 2013. In fact, many of my online gaming friends are still actively using their PlayStation 4 systems today.

The PlayStation 4, during its 11 years in existence, has managed to sell over 117 million units, making it one of the highest-selling video game consoles ever, with just the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo Switch selling more.

The PlayStation 4 wasn’t just about hardware improvements; it reshaped the concept of what the next generation of video games was capable of, by introducing high-definition textures and immersive cinematic gameplay experiences. During this period, open-world games really took off, giving birth to many popular franchises that continue to spark lively debates among gaming enthusiasts.

Here, I present my picks for the best PlayStation 4 games of all time:

The Last Of Us Part II

In a fresh rephrasing, let me say: Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic storytelling once again struck deep emotional chords with its powerful sequel, The Last of Us Part II. This game is a gripping epic that delves into the shadows and depths of human nature.

The main idea of this game revolves around themes of revenge, and it’s filled with violent events. You can either control Abby, who’s out for vengeance after her father’s death, or Ellie, on a rampage following Joel’s death. This story presents complex moral issues for both characters. The ending beautifully and powerfully connects all the plot points, making it one of Naughty Dog’s most memorable stories.

The game functions as a sensitive measure of empathy, providing a harsh commentary on human cruelty. I found myself feeling remorseful for killing the non-player characters, as Naughty Dog skillfully gave each one a sense of humanity. Although The Last of Us Part II sparked controversy among its viewers, it strongly connected with those who understood its message.

Bloodborne

After its launch, Bloodborne established a new standard for games similar to the Souls series. Its impact was immense, shaping and essentially coining the term “Soulsborne” genre by focusing on intense, proactive battle tactics within the realm of action role-playing games.

This game serves as an exceptional demonstration of Lovecraftian storytelling as well. Bloodborne, being my initial Souls title, immediately drew me in with its ominous and gothic ambiance. Once I had enough understanding or perspective (Insight) to perceive the covert horrors inhabiting Yharnam, I realized I was in for a unique experience.

Despite being a Soulsborne title, Bloodborne incorporates genuinely unsettling horror elements. Its expansion, The Old Hunters, only solidified its position as my favorite entry in the series. Sadly, we may never experience it at 60fps, as Sony appears allergic to money.

Horizon Zero Dawn

The Horizon series represented a daring leap by PlayStation and Guerrilla Games into the realm of expansive, high-budget open worlds. Horizon Zero Dawn served as a testament to the peak capabilities of the PlayStation 4, utilizing Guerrilla’s own Decima Engine to produce one of the most visually awe-inspiring games ever crafted.

The game chronicles Aloy’s journey to preserve a post-apocalyptic Earth devastated by an AI disaster. Its storyline is fresh and stimulating, delving into humanity’s adherence to traditional customs despite being oblivious to the brutal truths of their surroundings.

Zero Dawn’s compelling narrative is accompanied by swift-moving gameplay, where players engage in intense battles against enormous mechanical creatures using improvised weapons such as bows, arrows, and Tripcasters. The game rewards cunning strategies and accuracy, making every encounter exhilarating. It’s incredibly gratifying to strike a weak spot and watch the creature explode into numerous pieces after Aloy’s well-placed hit.

In terms of visuals and gameplay mechanics, Horizon Forbidden West significantly improved upon what the series already offered. However, its storyline seemed somewhat less powerful compared to earlier installments.

Ghost Of Tsushima

Jin Sakai’s tale is about finding redemption, making sacrifices, and standing firm for a waning ideology. Although it shares similarities with a popular Ubisoft series (ahem), Ghost of Tsushima outshines through its exceptional storytelling and captivating open-world environment.

Unlike numerous open-world games, Tsushima eschews excessive open-world activities. Each side quest contributes to the development of Jin’s character and boosts the overall gameplay experience. Its streamlined user interface, which employs organic elements such as wind and wildlife to guide players, heightens immersion. Tracing foxes and golden birds frequently leads to hidden riches and unforgettable moments.

The gameplay is equally compelling as well. Whether wielding a blade in honorable duels or employing stealth tactics as the titular Ghost, Jin’s combat is precise and deeply satisfying. Inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s samurai films, Ghost of Tsushima delivers a power fantasy like no other. The upcoming sequel, Ghost of Yotei, has much to live up to.

God Of War

The metamorphosis of Kratos in God of War is undeniably one of the most striking character evolutions in gaming history. Over many years, he was consumed by anger and revenge, but his entrance into Norse folklore presents him as a man striving for atonement, seeking to fulfill his role as a father.

With his son Atreus by his side, Kratos transforms from a vengeful half-god into a caring and watchful parent. Wielding the Leviathan Axe, he confronts the Norse gods who are plotting to shatter his tranquility, paving the way for Ragnarok. Let’s give him some space, folks.

This new gameplay deviated significantly from the usual hack-and-slash dynamics that the franchise is known for, instead adopting a dramatic, third-person viewpoint. Even the initial battle with Baldur showed the promise of Sony Santa Monica’s revamped fighting style.

Among several notable games like Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Death Stranding, and Red Dead Redemption 2, there are five exceptional titles that really catch the eye due to their innovative storylines and gameplay mechanics. These games are expected to significantly influence the gaming world for a long time.
