- Pokémon Go developer Niantic has been acquired by Monopoly Go developer scopely
- This was done to the tune of an eye-watering $35 billion
- The acquisition means that Niantic’s highly successful catalogue will join Scopely’s own releases
Today marks a significant milestone for Pokémon Go, not due to any in-game events, but rather an exciting development outside of it. The reason being, Niantic, creators of Pokémon Go, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now, and Peridot, have been bought out by Scopely. Yes, the same Scopely responsible for Monopoly Go! Now. As a result, Scopely and their parent company Savvy Games Group now own Niantic’s entire collection of games.
35 billion dollars was invested during this acquisition, which will result in Niantic’s AR technology division becoming an independent company called Niantic Spatial. For users, there appears to be little impact on service, but for those following the broader industry, this marks a significant shift.
Despite encountering significant challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Niantic made a massive impact on the global scene with its release of Pokémon Go as far back as 2016.
