As a long-time fan of Pokémon GO, I’ve been following its journey closely and was surprised to learn that the game has had brief stints of availability in China and Russia, only to be pulled again for legal reasons. As someone who has played this mobile game extensively in various parts of the world, it’s fascinating to see how the app’s reach is not universal.
The widely-used Pokémon GO mobile application continues to captivate its devoted fanbase on a daily basis. However, one might be astonished to learn that this game is not accessible in every location. This became evident when China temporarily permitted the game’s use, which was subsequently halted due to legal complications.
The gaming community on Reddit, specifically The Silph Road forum (as reported by Eurogamer), disclosed that some Chinese players managed to access and briefly play the game, successfully capturing critters in specific locations. Regrettably, a few users created in-game postcards at Tiananmen Square, an area with a sensitive history following the 1989 student protests which resulted in tragic events.
It’s worth noting that the report suggests Pokémon GO was temporarily accessible in Russia, but later removed. This is despite the game not being officially released in some Chinese regions. The removal from Russia reportedly stemmed from the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Currently, Niantic hasn’t responded about the sudden appearance of these games in these specific regions, suggesting that it might have been an unintentional glitch rather than a planned release. Given the significant impact of having games in China for gaming companies, we find it unlikely that this was a silent launch or similar event.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that China’s gaming regulations can be quite puzzling, leading to fewer official game releases within the country. For instance, it wasn’t until a few years ago that the Nintendo Switch was made available for purchase in China – a significant system that took its sweet time to arrive. Given their vast gaming industry, it makes sense that they prioritize developing their own games. One such example is Zenless Zone Zero, which has been quite successful. However, console releases are scarce in the Chinese market, making me eagerly wait for more.
Niantic appears to be developing something significant for Pokémon GO, hinted by recent promotional images suggesting Dynamax features for the game. rest assured, this popular mobile app isn’t disappearing anytime soon, as fans remain engaged in their quests to discover Pokémon during their daily walks. Best of all, it’s still free to download, despite some frustrations from pay-to-win mechanics.
