Pokemon Legends Z-A May Have The Oddest Set Of Starters

The excitement among Pokémon enthusiasts has been growing steadily since the initial unveiling of Pokémon Legends Z-A, and it doesn’t seem to be abating any time soon. This upcoming title, which takes place in the futuristic, altered landscape of Lumiose, is sparking intense analysis among fans as they scrutinize every frame of the trailer.

However, amidst the thrilling atmosphere of city life pulsating with energy, neon illuminations, Fight Club-like intrigue, and hints about Zygarde’s involvement, it was unfortunately the starters that managed to overshadow everything in an undesirable way.

As the camera swooped lower to disclose the trio of Pokémon up for selection, a collective gasp echoed among the crowd. “Chikorita? Totodile? Tepig?” They read, but confusion set in. “Wait, what?” seemed to be the unspoken response.

Gen 2’s Chikorita and Totodile, along with Gen 5’s Tepig.

It seems the team gathered spontaneously at a bus stop, not through the regional professor’s arrangement. Internet memes quickly filled social media platforms. One of them depicted Cyndaquil (the Gen 2 fire starter) shedding tears as his other Gen 2 companions were on their way to Kalos with another fire-type Pokemon, while another post humorously showed Tepig saying “they haven’t figured out yet that I’m not from Johto, but they might be starting to catch on.

These posts indicate that the community either thinks this fresh trio is an amusing combination or considers them an unusual mixture of unlikely starters.

Prior to the unveiling, fans were nearly convinced that the Kalos trio – Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie – would make their comeback. Given that we’re back in the charming city of Kalos, it was a logical assumption. Some even speculated that each Kalos starter might finally receive a Mega Evolution to align with Zygarde’s forms.

Some people had hoped for a completely new group of Pokémon or perhaps some from less well-known regions such as Unova or Alola, to bring a fresh vibe. Yet, nobody anticipated this seemingly nostalgic yet incongruous pairing from various locations. It was as if Game Freak were drawing names at random from a Pokémon hat.

However, following Game Freak’s traditional approach, it’s quite likely that this threesome will fit together nicely once you understand the context. Just as in Pokémon: Arceus, where the apparently disjointed combination of Cyndaquil, Oshawott, and Rowlet was given regional forms based on their backstory, there may be a hidden depth to Z-A.

It’s possible that this group of three is connected to the urban environment of New Lumiose City, or maybe Zygarde’s concept of harmony and union is significant. Additionally, it seems plausible that these are your initial picks, but other well-known characters, like the Kalos starters, could still be found throughout the game, similar to the concealed Hisuian forms in Arceus.

Despite some puzzling initial character choices, enthusiasm for Pokémon Legends Z-A remains high. Already, fans are brainstorming possibilities such as new regional evolutions, fresh types, and perhaps the much-anticipated comeback of Mega Evolutions.

Though Tepig, Chikorita, and Totodile may not appear legendary at present, they could very well become legends in their own right someday. The upcoming game, Pokémon Legends Z-A, is expected to launch in 2025 on both the Nintendo Switch and its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2.

Up until that point, trainers will scrutinize every single scene from the trailer, standing by for any unexpected twists – whether it’s peculiar Pokémon debuts or astonishing Mega evolutions.
