Pokémon TCG Pocket hits over 10 million downloads

  • The hotly-anticipated Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket is a big hit
  • In less than a week it has accrued more than 10 million downloads across all platforms
  • Pokémon TCG Pocket brings a digital version of the super-popular mobile card game to smartphone

As a lifelong Pokémon enthusiast who can recall the thrill of opening my very first booster pack, I must say that the release of Pokémon TCG Pocket has sent me into a whirlwind of nostalgia-induced excitement! With over 10 million downloads in less than a week across all platforms, it’s clear that this digital adaptation of the popular mobile card game is hitting all the right notes.

It’s no surprise, but Pokémon has a huge fanbase. The newest spin-off, Pokémon TCG Pocket, which replicates the trading card game on your smartphone, has garnered much anticipation and has been downloaded more than 10 million times across all platforms since its October release.

It’s no secret that the original Pokémon Trading Card Game, along with the TV show and video games, catapulted the franchise into immense popularity. For years, fans have yearned for a digital platform where they can play and collect cards in a manner reminiscent of the traditional game.

It’s not surprising at all that Pokémon TCG Pocket has been warmly accepted. Even though it’s still in its early stages, our own assessment of Pokémon TCG Pocket was highly positive, commending the overall experience. The only issue we noted was occasional lengthy animations.

Pokémania returns

Could it be that we’re witnessing a new era for the mobile version of Pokémon? Given the challenges digital card game versions have faced in comparison to adaptations or unique mobile TCGs, it’s certainly encouraging to see a well-established franchise like Pokémon making such an impact early on. Nevertheless, it might just be the initial excitement that big franchises often experience at launch. As with Niantic’s Pokémon Go, we’ll have to observe how long-term support develops to truly understand if this is a lasting success.
