As a seasoned movie critic with a lifelong obsession with animation, I must say that this upcoming collaboration between The Pokémon Company International and Aardman Animations has me absolutely buzzing! Growing up, Wallace and Gromit were the epitome of claymation genius, and to see them bring their signature charm and wit to the world of Pokémon is a match made in animation heaven.
A remarkable collaboration has emerged between two globally adored brands: The Pokémon Company International and the renowned animation studio, Aardman Animations (known for Wallace and Gromit movies), have revealed they will team up to create a claymation project showcasing everyone’s favorite brand.
As reported by Variety, the companies are delighted to collaborate on redesigning the timeless Pokémon brand with a modern twist, according to Aardman managing director Sean Clarke.
Working with The Pokémon Company International is a significant honor; we genuinely feel humbled by their trust in allowing us to reimagine their beloved characters and universe. Combining the global phenomenon of Pokémon with our passion for craft, character development, and comedic narratives generates immense excitement. Aardman and TPCi both value tradition, detail, and placing fans and audiences first, which we believe will guide us effectively as we collaborate on creating fresh, endearing, and innovative stories to captivate global audiences.
Taito Okiura, VP of marketing and media at The Pokémon Company, added:
Partnering with Aardman Animation is like a dream come true for us at Pokémon! Their skill and imagination never fail to impress, and the collaborative projects we’ve been developing will surely delight our worldwide fanbase!
Pokémon Is Going in a Very Different Direction
Lately, there’s been a strong trend of transforming conventionally animated content into live-action versions, aiming to bring animated characters into our familiar reality. It appears that almost every Disney animated movie is being reimagined in live-action, and even Pokemon joined the bandwagon with the 2019 release of “Detective Pikachu”, starring Ryan Reynolds as the cuddly yellow Pokemon. Despite its success, it didn’t seem to preserve the enchantment that the original animated Pokemon series is known for.
In an interesting twist, claymation could potentially become the ideal medium for the fantastical universe of Squirtle and Snorlax. Previously, these vibrant characters have ventured into stop-motion animation, as evidenced by the series “Pokémon Concierge” released on Netflix last year. Notably, Aardman Animations, the studio behind this project, has also been active in creating recent stop-motion works like “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget.
Presently, these two companies are sketching an engaging scenario for what the future Pokémon venture will be like. However, fans won’t get to witness their beloved battling creatures in claymation until 2027. Despite the pending release of the Detective Pikachu sequel, Pokémon enthusiasts have another distinctive project to anticipate, and they can rewatch plenty of animated content in the meantime for preparation.
The Pokémon and Aardman collaboration is set to be released sometime in 2027.
