1. Lagaan

2001’s Lagaan is among India’s most revered movies that received an Oscar nomination. Specifically, it was nominated for the category of Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards.

As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but express my profound appreciation for the masterpiece directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, featuring the illustrious Aamir Khan. This epic tale, steeped in history, sports, and patriotism, transports us back to colonial India. The narrative unfolds around a small group of villagers, who under the crushing weight of an unjust land tax (lagaan), dared to challenge their British overlords to an extraordinary cricket match—a game that was entirely alien to them at the time.

2.  Mother India

1957’s Mother India, helmed by Mehboob Khan, stands as one of Bollywood’s most memorable and costly productions during its era. This influential movie featured Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Raaj Kumar, and Rajendra Kumar in prominent roles. At the time, it held the record for the highest-grossing Indian film, a title later claimed by Mughal-e-Azam (1960).

In this compelling play, we witness a heartrending depiction of post-independence rural life in India, centering around a resourceful yet impoverished mother who persists in maintaining her values amidst overwhelming adversities.

1958’s Academy Awards marked a historic moment for India, as Mother India became the country’s very first movie to receive an Oscar nomination. The nomination was in the category of Best Foreign Language Film.

3. The White Tiger

2021’s The White Tiger is a compelling dramatic movie penned and helmed by Ramin Bahrani, inspired by Aravind Adiga’s Booker Prize-winning novel. Featuring Adarsh Gourav, Priyanka Chopra (who was also one of the film’s producers), and Rajkummar Rao, the narrative explores the complex issues of social class and caste in contemporary India.

The movie tells the story of Balram Halwai, played by Gourav, a resourceful and driven character from a humble background in India, who skillfully maneuvers through the country’s entrenched class system to escape poverty and ascend as a thriving businessman.

At the 93rd Annual Academy Awards, the film “The White Tiger” was nominated for the Best Adapted Screenplay award, receiving worldwide acclaim due to its compelling storyline.

4. Anuja

At the 2025 Academy Awards, Anuja’s short film was put forward as a contender in the Best Live Action Short Film category; however, it ultimately didn’t win the award, which went instead to the Dutch film titled “I’m Not a Robot.

This film, titled “Hunger & Hope,” is directed by Adam Graves. Starring in it are Sajda Pathan and Ananya Shanbhag. You can now stream it on Netflix. The movie delves into a moving narrative about hunger and hope, focusing on the struggles of underprivileged children in India.

5. Salaam Bombay

1988’s film, titled “Salaam Bombay!”, was helmed by Mira Nair. This cinematic work was recognized with a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 61st Academy Awards. It garnered international praise for its unflinchingly authentic depiction of life within India’s slums, earning acclaim for its raw and realistic portrayal.

The movie penned jointly by Sooni Taraporevala delves into the hardships endured by street kids in Mumbai, spotlighting issues such as drug abuse, sex work, and underage labor. It offers a raw portrayal of the grueling realities confronted by disadvantaged groups, earning it a reputation as one of the most potent Indian productions to garner international acclaim.
