Polygon regains control of its Discord after hack, scam link scare

As a seasoned crypto investor who has been through numerous ups and downs in this wild and unpredictable market, I can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu when I hear about yet another hack on a popular crypto platform like Polygon. The incident with their Discord channel is just the latest example of how scammers are constantly evolving their tactics to exploit unsuspecting users.

On August 24th, it appears that the security of the Polygon‘s Discord channel was breached. However, the higher-ups at the blockchain platform managed to reestablish control over it approximately four hours later.

Due to an early security breach, Mudit Gupta, the head of information security at Polygon (MATIC), advised users on X.com to refrain from clicking any links within the official Discord channel until additional instructions are given.

Notice: Avoid clicking on any links within the @0xPolygon Discord channel for now, as it has been taken over and we are working to regain control.

The event sparked worries within the Polygon user community, as a user identified as shadabk2005 (X-handle) expressed that fraudulent links were being shared in the channel.

0xPolygon, it seems like your Discord might have been compromised as there are suspicious links being shared in the announcements channel, and I was temporarily blocked for bringing attention to this issue in the support channel. Is everything okay on your end?

No further information regarding the incident was forthcoming.

Approximately four hours after his initial post, Gupta shared an update, letting people know that the Polygon team had regained control over their channel and were making adjustments to undo any changes made by hackers in order to prevent another similar attack.

See below.

Update: We’ve managed to reestablish control, and now we’re meticulously undoing the alterations made by the hacker to prevent any future intrusions.

Discord is a widely-used, no-cost online communication tool that’s particularly favored by cryptocurrency enthusiasts, along with X, Telegram, and Reddit. Many projects utilize this platform for disseminating crucial updates, but it appears that scammers are also paying attention to it.

Attacks on the platform are more frequent, with crypto.news reporting several such incidents.

In July, the management of the Ethereum (ETH) liquid staking platform Renzo fell into the hands of malicious users, taking control of their Discord channel. Initially, it wasn’t certain if any users had lost funds due to this hack.

In yet another occurrence, cybercriminals embedded a fraudulent Discord link onto the site of the security evaluation company CertiK. Those who uncovered this deceit claim that the link directed to a counterfeit Discord server containing harmful software intended to empty funds from users’ digital wallets.

In September 2023, CertiK revealed that scammers managed to steal over $6 million by launching attacks through unauthorized crypto Discord servers. These attackers primarily utilized these servers for distributing false token airdrop notifications, which often included harmful phishing links disguised within the airdrop links.
