Popeye Unleashed: Shiver Me Timbers Turns Sailor into Nightmare

1986 summer in Northern California, Olive Oyl, her cinema-loving companions, and her brother Castor decide to go on an extraordinary camping trip. Their goal? To see the stunning meteor shower that coincides with Halley’s comet. However, what was initially a peaceful night of stargazing soon becomes a terrifying ordeal when a meteor from the comet unexpectedly turns Popeye into a fearsome and relentless slayer.

Alpake, a film production company based in Scotland, proudly showcases its gritty movies on its website and is responsible for the latest spin-off from Popeye, titled “Shiver Me Timbers“. Notably, this isn’t the first time that Popeye has been reimagined as a chilling adaptation of E. C. Segar’s original 1929 comic strip character. Previous interpretations include “Popeye’s Revenge” from 2025 and “Popeye the Slayer Man“.

Popeye Is Hardly “I Yam What I Yam” in ‘Shiver Me Timbers’

Is it possible that Shiver Me Timbers could one day be recognized as a horror classic? Time will decide, but the movie may have already made a misstep by neglecting to include some popular Popeye characters. If the actors in Shiver Me Timbers are secretly depicting Popeye personas, then Swee’Pea, Wimpy, and Bluto/Brutus might be missing from the cast list. Moreover, characters like Whaler Joe, buck-toothed Oscar, and Alice the Goon are also conspicuously absent. However, director Paul Stephen Mann appears to have a deep understanding of Popeye lore.

In the horror comedy, Popeye’s beloved character Olive Oyl, played by an actress named Amy Mackie, makes an appearance, but it seems unlikely that she will be romantically involved with any version of the spinach-loving sailor in this new installment. Olive’s brother Castor, portrayed by Brendan Nelson, and Cylinda, acted by Niamh Parrington, are also part of the cast. A character named Lizzy, played by Leona Roberts, is not spelled the same as the cartoon character Lizzie, Bluto’s wife in Popeye and Son (1987), but she might still be a tribute to that character. Lastly, Spike, originally played by Denis Franz in the famous Popeye (1980) film, appears in the credits under Seb Lord’s performance.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the striking resemblance between Homeless George (Paul Dewdney) and the beloved character George W. Geezil from the source material. However, it seems that our dear Popeye won’t be reuniting with any of his familiar faces in this new horror movie due to a chilling transformation. Director Mick Mann employs an enigmatic meteorite, eerily reminiscent of a piece of red Kryptonite, as the catalyst for this transformation. In Alpake Entertainment’s upcoming film, Shiver Me Timbers, we witness Old Man Popeye (David Hallows) morph into the terrifying Monster Popeye (Anthony Greer).

The main trailer follows three earlier previews, and Mann’s movie appears to be a blend honoring not just Popeye but also the pinnacle of the slasher sub-genre from the 1980s. Shiver Me Timbers is hyped as a film brimming with sex, violence, and narcotics. Interestingly, Mann also references one of Ash Williams’ (Bruce Campbell) lines from the sequel to The Evil Dead, specifically Army of Darkness (1992). The same character with dark hair in both the trailer and the initial teaser can be heard saying this line to his partner: “‘Pass me some sweetness, darling.’

Shiver Me Timbers is set to release in April 2025. In the meantime, enthusiasts of the stalwart sailor man can explore arguably the finest Popeye adaptation ever made. The 1980 film featuring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall commemorates its 45th anniversary this coming December and is currently available for free streaming on Pluto TV. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that Halley’s comet won’t be observable from Earth until the year 2061 (as per NASA).
