As a cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must admit that the ever-changing landscape of upcoming films can be both exhilarating and frustrating. The recent announcement of Ice Age 6 taking the place of a potential Star Wars film on Disney’s release schedule is certainly unexpected, to say the least.
It seems that the future of this franchise might continue to expand with numerous “in-progress” films, but there’s a lot of doubt about which ones will eventually make it to theaters. Recently, Disney has decided to swap out one of those movies from its release date of December 18, 2026, instead opting for the freshly announced Ice Age 6 on that spot.
Multiple films could potentially fill the scheduled release date, but nothing was officially announced. Among the upcoming productions, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey film and James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi were considered strong contenders for that slot, as The Mandalorian & Grogu has been confirmed to premiere in May 2026.
Although the recent development doesn’t directly imply that one of the upcoming Star Wars films is going to be scrapped, it does occur shortly after Simon Kinberg was chosen to script a new trilogy set post-sequel trilogy. This announcement has left Obaid-Chinoy’s planned Rey film in an uncertain position, as both projects would share a similar place in the chronology of events within the galaxy far, far away.
At this point, it’s important to clarify that this does not necessarily mean any Star Wars movies have been canceled. However, Lucasfilm has a tendency to announce films that don’t ultimately get made or even start production. Over the past few years, more than ten new Star Wars movies have been announced, but fans are yet to see the franchise back in cinemas with its first theatrical release since 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker“.
Ice Age 6 Was An Unexpected Announcement at D23 Brazil
Despite fans being let down by no new Star Wars movie announcements from Lucasfilm at D23 Brazil this past month, the unexpected confirmation that Ice Age 6 is being made stood out as one of the more surprising disclosures. It’s been nearly a decade since talks about an Ice Age sequel first emerged, and although the franchise reappeared with The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild in 2022, it seemed unlikely that there would be an Ice Age 6.
In discussing the upcoming Buck Wild spin-off, producer Lori Forte hinted that a new Ice Age film might be produced if there’s enough fan interest. She stated, “If fans are eager for another Ice Age movie, we could make one.
As a devoted fan, I eagerly share my fervent hope that this project resonates with you all. Your positive response will empower us to embark on another exhilarating journey. If the demand is there, our minds brimming with creative ideas are at your disposal. There’s an endless wellspring of concepts, adventures, and characters waiting to be brought to life, so we stand ready when you are!
Initially, the exclusive debut on Disney+ didn’t exactly elicit enthusiastic responses from either viewers or critics. In fact, the film managed a 17% Tomatometer rating among critics and only garnered 32% approval from viewers, suggesting it might not have a sequel. However, fast-forward two years, and it appears that Ice Age 6 is thriving, defying expectations set by its predecessor. Interestingly, Disney shows confidence in the first movie since Blue Sky Studios closed, assigning it the highly sought-after December release slot typically reserved for their most prominent films.
