Exciting news! I’ve learned that the esteemed director Susanne Bier, who has won Oscars, Golden Globes, and Emmys, is in talks to direct the sequel to the enchanting 1998 romantic-comedy “Practical Magic“. Although the agreement with Warner Bros., the studio responsible for the film, isn’t finalized yet, it’s a heartening indication of the potential return of the beloved duo… (You can fill in the blanks with the names of the actresses who played the main characters in Practical Magic)
In this upcoming collaboration, both actors will be reuniting with their past partners in projects. Bullock previously worked with Bier on Netflix’s movie “Bird Box,” a horror adaptation of Josh Malerman’s novel, while Kidman teamed up with the director on HBO’s series “The Undoing” and the Netflix miniseries “The Perfect Couple.” Bier, who won an Oscar for best international feature film in 2010 with “In a Better World,” has also directed movies like “Things We Lost in the Fire” starring Halle Berry and Benicio del Toro. She is known as the primary creative mind behind the TV miniseries “The First Lady” and “The Night Manager.
The initial movie, crafted by Griffen Dunne and adapted from Alice Hoffman’s novel, focuses on two sisters portrayed by Bullock and Kidman, who are descendants of witches. Following the demise of their parents due to a family hex, these sisters were nurtured by their aunts in a quaint town. Here, they encounter discrimination while contending with the possible curse that could hinder them from experiencing genuine love.
In a return to the magical world of Practical Magic, its initial screenwriter Akiva Goldsman is set to write the script for the sequel. Meanwhile, Denise Di Novi, who was involved in the production of the original film, will also come back, this time collaborating with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman on the production side.
Producer Di Novi Promises a Spiritually-Faithful Sequel
The upcoming movie is rumored to be a rendition based on Hoffman’s follow-up story, entitled “The Book of Magic,” which was released in 2021. Producer Di Novi discussed the film with MovieWeb, mentioning that it will result from thoughtful deliberation about what made the initial movie successful.
It seems to me that there’s been plenty of opportunity for reflection on why that film continues to strike a chord with viewers. Essentially, it’s about the bond between sisters, the importance of family, staying true to oneself despite not fitting in, and discovering the extraordinary within the ordinary – or, in simpler terms, the magic hidden in everyday life.
Di Novi assured us that the upcoming sequel will remain true to the core themes of the original film. “The essence of life lies in what truly matters – family, happiness, love, music, home, nature, and aesthetics. The house, the garden from the movie have captivated many. Rest assured, we’ll stay committed to these ideas and to the characters played by Sandra and Nicole.”
Although no specific date has been given yet, it’s speculated that “Practical Magic 2” might appear in theaters sometime in 2021. However, given its early production phase, it might be a bit optimistic, and it’s more probable that we’ll see the sequel in 2026 or later on the big screen.
