As a lifelong fan who has spent countless hours dissecting and analyzing every twist and turn of the Predator franchise, I can confidently say that Dan Trachtenberg is breathing new life into this iconic series. The idea of focusing on the Predator himself is not only fresh but also incredibly intriguing.
The “Predator” series has been rejuvenated under the guidance of director Dan Trachtenberg. His remarkable work on the film “Prey” led him to take charge of not just one, but two sequels in this franchise. The upcoming movie is set to be as innovative as its predecessor, as it plans to break new ground by focusing primarily on the Predator, a departure from the usual format of “Predator” films.
Although the “Predator” films are commonly recognized as science fiction due to their extraterrestrial title character, they essentially fall under the slasher genre, where each film focuses on human characters being pursued by an almost unstoppable killing machine. In a conversation with Empire, Dan Trachtenberg revealed that the upcoming film “Predator: Badlands” (now scheduled for 2025) will deviate from this pattern as the Predator itself becomes the primary character. He elaborated on…
The figure stands prominently, spearheading the advance. He’s not just tough, but he stirs an emotional response within you as well. Developing a character that both resonates with us and leaves us awestruck has proven to be quite a task, yet it’s also thrilling.
Trachtenberg explains that the concept originated from a wish to innovate and expand the boundaries of the Predator series, similar to how Prey had done previously. Essentially, it seems they’re planning a film where viewers might find themselves supporting the Predator character.
It’s still uncertain how exactly the plot of Predator: Badlands will unfold, as our knowledge about it is rather scant. What we do know is that it will take place on an alien planet in the future, marking a new direction for the franchise. Initially, it was assumed that Elle Fanning would be the film’s protagonist, but now it’s uncertain who the main character or the Predator’s target might be. There’s even speculation that Fanning and the Predator could potentially team up instead.
I must admit, I’m not entirely clear on the latest developments with “Predator: Badlands”, but I’m definitely eager to find out more. In writing our review for “Prey”, I couldn’t find a single negative point to mention. Honestly, I believe it’s the finest film in the Predator series. Director Dan Trachtenberg has earned my trust, as when he ventures into something truly innovative, he hits a home run every time.
Engaging empathetically with a Creature known for its predation might appear to be quite challenging. Up until now, these characters have been portrayed as nothing more than hunters driven by instinct, with minimal emotional depth beyond anger. Crafting a Predator character that can stir emotions in the audience without veering too far from their established nature is no easy task – it’s the very challenge that makes it enticing.
If this strategy proves effective, it will undoubtedly amplify our anticipation for the future of this series. Notably, Dan Trachtenberg has a new Predator film in the pipeline, which he filmed secretly alongside Badlands. Although a sequel to Prey sounds appealing, I’m all for exploring fresh avenues with the Predator franchise if it means pushing its boundaries further.
