Every year, as one television season ends and another begins, several shows are inevitably canceled, much like leaves falling from trees in autumn. This could include sitcoms, dramas, reality shows, cherished animated series, or anything in between. If a show fails to maintain an audience’s interest, it’s typically removed. In 2025, viewers had to bid farewell to the Reagan family on “Blue Bloods” and close the book on “S.W.A.T.” after eight seasons. The cancellations of these two shows sparked strong reactions from their dedicated fan bases. As new shows make their debut each year, there’s always room for change in the television schedule.
Despite several popular shows being renewed for the 2025-2026 season, there are still quite a few series that may not make it past next year. These shows might be facing programming oversaturation, low viewership, lack of public interest, or other factors that suggest they won’t return. However, it’s important to note that predictions aren’t always accurate, and some of these series could potentially continue. Nevertheless, we anticipate that their run will likely come to an end. Some have been on the air for a while, while others are relatively new with only one season completed. But here’s why all of them might be headed for cancellation by their networks.
Grosse Pointe Garden Society
In a blend reminiscent of “Why Women Kill” and “Desperate Housewives,” with a touch of Ryan Murphy’s distinctive style, we arrive at “Grosse Pointe Garden Society.” This dramedy delves into the dark side of suburban life. The story revolves around four members of a gardening club – Birdie (Melissa Fumero), Catherine (Aja Naomi King), Brett (Ben Rappaport) and Alice (AnnaSophia Robb). These individuals are implicated in the murder of a fellow neighborhood resident. However, their personal secrets, which are as twisted as the vines they tend to, might soon overshadow this crime, making it appear almost trivial by comparison.
The Nielsen ratings, much like various scents, are indicative of a show’s popularity. For instance, the series “Grosse Point Garden Society” on NBC has been consistently scoring below 1.9 every week, making it the least-watched scripted drama in their schedule. To add insult to injury, after airing four episodes, NBC has relocated this drama from its prime Sunday at 10:00 p.m. slot to Fridays at 8:00 p.m., a time that usually houses “Shark Tank,” ABC’s megahit, and replacing NBC’s successful Friday night sitcom block. While it may seem like an ideal replacement for the news magazines that typically dominate this hour on other networks, it hasn’t been beneficial for “Grosse Point Garden Society.” This move suggests that the show might not survive its first season — in fact, it could be canceled before even airing its last Season 1 episode.
Suits: LA
For NBC, this spin-off of their hit series “Suits” must be quite a disappointment. While it aims to capitalize on the streaming success of its sister show, the new series “Suits: LA” only includes one of the original characters, Harvey Specter (played by Gabriel Macht), who appears sporadically to offer guidance. Unlike the original series that delved into corporate law, “Suits: LA” focuses on entertainment law and criminal cases, representing the wealthy.
As a gamer, I can’t help but miss the dynamic between Harvey Specter and his partner Mike Ross – their chemistry was unmatched. But in “Suits: LA,” the storyline centers around the betrayal between Ted Black and his former partner Stuart Lane. Ted’s a good guy, don’t get me wrong, but he lacks the charm to keep me hooked, and his team of partners isn’t compelling enough yet to make me lean forward in my seat with anticipation.
Initially, the unique aspects of the show led to strong viewership ratings in the Nielsens. However, weekly performances have been decreasing, with its latest episode reaching a 1.587. Currently, only “Grosse Point Garden Society” on NBC’s Sunday lineup is performing worse, while CBS and ABC are giving tough competition. Whether the show will be renewed depends largely on whether the costs outweigh the viewership numbers. Let’s wait and see if it can pull off a miraculous comeback reminiscent of Harvey himself.
The Hunting Party
“Currently, ‘The Hunting Party’ seems unlikely for renewal despite its consistent weekly ratings of 2.9 and above. While high ratings usually secure continuation in the TV industry, other elements could lead to its cancellation. These include lackluster buzz and a challenging year for cop-based procedurals. With the One Chicago series on hold for renewal, it seems ‘The Hunting Party’ may not get a second chance.”
The series primarily revolves around FBI agent Rebecca “Bex” Henderson, portrayed by Melissa Roxburgh. She finds herself working alongside her former partner, Oliver, to apprehend a multitude of lethal serial killers. A catastrophe at an underground prison hidden within the FBI’s Wyoming headquarters has released some of the deadliest criminals back into society. Bex is tasked with identifying and capturing them before disaster strikes again. The show is holding its own, but NBC has several high-stakes thrillers lined up, so whether “The Irrational” can bounce back from its ratings decline will determine its future. If it doesn’t recover, NBC might opt to renew “The Hunting Party,” or they could decide that the costs outweigh the benefits and cancel the show. Our prediction leans towards cancellation.
Doctor Odyssey
In simpler terms, “Dr. Odyssey” has been struggling to maintain its audience due to its placement sandwiched between popular shows like “9-1-1” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” This position seems to have given it an unfair advantage in the past, but when removed from this supportive slot, it appears quite weak. Its ratings have dropped significantly, from 4.23 to 2.66, which is a disappointing loss following “9-1-1,” a show that continues to attract around 4 million viewers. The only thing keeping “Dr. Odyssey” somewhat viable for ABC is the fact that “Grey’s Anatomy,” which is performing worse than “Dr. Odyssey,” is only managing about a million viewers in its new time slot. However, given the low ratings of “Odyssey,” it seems unlikely that the long-running drama will be renewed for a 22nd season.
Although the ratings for the show aren’t catastrophic, there’s still a chance that good things may come from its precarious position. It could potentially get shifted to 10 p.m., hoping that the ratings for “Grey’s” might increase an hour earlier and provide better support as a lead-in series. The intriguing, soapy, and sensual escapades of Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) and his team could draw viewers back for Season 2, considering people are generally drawn to spectacles. Since the show is positioned tonally between “Grey’s” and “9-1-1,” it fits well. However, when shark attacks and crossovers fail to captivate audiences, it’s challenging to foresee a future for the series beyond the Cancellation Bear, let alone the final weeks of March. Still, if you enjoyed “The Pitt,” it might be worth watching.
Poppa’s House
Poppa’s Home” is an endearing multi-generational sitcom, filled with veteran TV actors from the Wayans clan. With its abundance of heartfelt humor and a witty edge that keeps it lively even when it teeters on sentimentality, it certainly holds its ground. However, its viewership ratings haven’t significantly increased compared to what “Bob Hearts Abishola” garnered in the same time slot during its final season. It’s also trailing behind the weekly growth of “The Neighborhood” in terms of audience numbers.
It seems quite plausible that CBS might opt to introduce a new sitcom instead of continuing “The Neighborhood,” given its moderate ratings and limited popularity among viewers. As a result, the future of their Monday 8 p.m. slot for the 2025-2026 season appears rather bleak at present.
1. There are several factors that could potentially help “Poppa’s House” endure, such as its strong comedic heritage within the Wayans family, CBS’s need for a robust companion show for “The Neighborhood” to facilitate syndication, and the fact that CBS owns the series itself. However, if the network aims to connect “The Neighborhood” with their long-running “NCIS” franchise, they may want to explore other options for a successful show.
2. Several elements could potentially support the longevity of “Poppa’s House,” including its established comic lineage in the Wayans family, CBS’s desire for a strong partner for “The Neighborhood” to facilitate syndication, and the fact that CBS holds the rights to the series. Yet, if the network is looking to bridge the gap between “The Neighborhood” and their consistent “NCIS” franchise, they might need to search elsewhere for a hit.
3. “Poppa’s House” could benefit from several factors, like its robust comedic history within the Wayans family, CBS’s requirement for a strong counterpart for “The Neighborhood” to facilitate syndication, and the fact that CBS owns the series. But if the network wants to link “The Neighborhood” with their evergreen “NCIS” franchise, they may need to investigate other shows for success.
4. There are several aspects that could potentially sustain “Poppa’s House,” including its comedic legacy in the Wayans family, CBS’s search for a powerful ally for “The Neighborhood” to facilitate syndication, and the fact that CBS owns the series itself. However, if the network intends to link “The Neighborhood” with their enduring “NCIS” franchise, they might want to seek another show for success.
Going Dutch
For several weeks, Fox has been making a concerted effort to draw viewers to the show “Going Dutch.” They’ve been using YouTube extensively for promotion, with frequent adverts featuring short clips. However, despite the heavy marketing campaign, it seems that the sitcom may be one of the freshman series canceled in 2025.
The show hasn’t been receiving high ratings and it’s not maintaining the viewership that its companion sitcom “Animal Control” on Fox is consistently gaining each week. Its ratings have seen an unstable pattern, peaking and then plummeting. It seems Fox had high expectations for Denis Leary with this show, maybe aiming to establish him in a similar vein to Tim Allen, but it doesn’t appear that’s happening as planned.
The comedy series revolves around an old-school military figure, Colonel Patrick Quinn (played by Leary), who finds himself in a peculiar predicament when he’s transferred to the Netherlands and assigned to a base devoid of any tactical importance. This base attracts carefree, party-loving individuals due to its leisure facilities and absence of genuine peril. To complicate matters further, his contact at the base, as well as the person he’s relieving from command – Maggie (portrayed by Taylor Misiak) – is none other than his own daughter. This setup provides a basis for an amusing culture-clash sitcom, but unfortunately, it’s failing to resonate with its intended viewers.
Grimsburg
At present, Fox is overwhelmed by an abundance of animation-centric shows, often referred to as Animation Domination. With “Krapopolis” and “Universal Basic Guys” already secured for the next season, “American Dad!” slated to return in 2026, and long-running favorites like “The Simpsons,” “Family Guy,” and “Bob’s Burgers” expected to be renewed due to Fox’s collaboration with Hulu, there isn’t much space left on the schedule for additional animated sitcoms.
Although ratings for Season 5 of “The Great North” have dropped slightly following a disappointing Season 4, it appears that “Grimsburg” is at risk of being cancelled due to Fox not renewing their lineup of animated sitcoms. Looper had predicted its failure back in 2024, and it seems to be fulfilling this prophecy in 2025. With a weak cultural impact, often appearing as a carbon copy of “Sledge Hammer!”, and lacking the fan base that “The Great North” enjoys, the series struggles to make its police parodies interesting, and fails to stand out among similar shows. Given its status as one of the network’s lowest-rated programs, its future prospects are not promising.
Fox often pulls animated series during mid-season, ranging from “Duncanville,” “HouseBroken,” and “Bless the Harts” that were aired as spring comedies, to “Grimsburg” which hasn’t been chosen for fall premieres. Whether it continues through 2026 or not remains to be seen; only time will reveal which of these shows will find success.
Brilliant Minds
NBC currently has a large number of procedural shows airing, and “Brilliant Minds,” much like “The Irrational,” doesn’t seem to be particularly noteworthy despite its high-concept premise. The show is finding itself in a moderately successful position, averaging over 2 million live viewers per episode.
The show has found a relatively good position, but whether it’s wise to renew it at this stage is uncertain, particularly given that all One Chicago dramas are due for fresh contracts. It has encountered tough competition from the CBS “NCIS” series and suffered losses against “Monday Night Football” during autumn and winter. As we speak, it appears to be a dilemma, especially with the upcoming “New Amsterdam” spin-off seeking a spot on the schedule and numerous other medical dramas in circulation.
The allure of Zachary Quinto keeps viewers returning to the series: he portrays Dr. Oliver Wolf, a neurologist who encounters unusual circumstances each week as he endeavors to manage an unruly group of interns during their rounds. You could describe it as a blend of “Chicago Med” and “Chicago Hope,” but NBC may not be considering Season 2 given the current pace.
The Irrational
As a die-hard fan, I must admit Jesse L. Martin could convince even the most hardened souls to buy ice in Antarctica. However, his gripping series about behavioral science and criminal investigations, “The Irrational,” has been experiencing a significant drop in ratings throughout its second season. Despite its intriguing spin on the procedural genre, this downward trend might signal a less promising future for the show’s prospects. With a plethora of detective tales already simmering on our screens, it seems likely that “The Irrational” may soon meet its end.
Martin portrays Professor Alec Mercer, who unexpectedly collaborates with his former spouse, Marisa (Maahra Hill), in FBI operations. Utilizing his expertise, Alec specializes in profiling malefactors; an expert in behavioral sciences, he dedicates himself to apprehending the most vile and treacherous criminals. In this capacity, he serves as a consultant, yet Alec frequently encounters situations beyond the ordinary psychiatrist’s scope – all while grappling with the complex emotions stirred by his ex-wife’s presence.
The tension between Mercer’s convictions about his actions and the facts often makes for intriguing material – however, viewers seemed hooked during the season opener, but ratings have been declining steadily since then. Given this trend, even Dr. Mercer would predict this outcome: a probable cancellation, marking the end of his journey.
Accused
Accused”, an anthology series that delves into a different crime each hour, features a new ensemble cast for each episode, harking back to the classic era of television where weekly broadcasts were dedicated to standalone stage plays like “Westinghouse Theatre”. Despite its nostalgic appeal, viewership for “Accused” is only managing about a million viewers per week.
As a gamer, I must admit that the show had an impressive debut with a post-NFL game audience of approximately 8.71 million people, but unfortunately, things have taken a turn for the worse since then. The SAG-AFTRA strikes and being absent from the 2023-2024 schedule due to these conflicts didn’t help matters. Additionally, the early Tuesday time slot hasn’t been ideal, leading to a steady decline in viewership, with over seven million viewers abandoning the series since its initial release. The lack of positive press and dwindling audience numbers are definitely concerning signs that the show needs to make some changes to regain its momentum.
The series is currently in limbo, without a confirmation for renewal. Given that Fox has a massive hit like “Doc” and a strong finale for the mid-season like “The Cleaning Lady,” there’s not much hope for positive developments during this lengthy pause. It would be unfortunate if it gets canceled because it offers an intriguing concept. However, its prospects don’t seem promising, no matter how you look at it.
