As a long-time observer of American politics, I find myself deeply troubled by President Joe Biden’s recent decision to pardon his son, Hunter. While it is within the president’s power to grant clemency, I believe this action raises serious ethical questions and undermines the trust that Americans have placed in their leaders.
Last night, President Joe Biden granted clemency to his son, Hunter Biden. This act spared him from potentially facing imprisonment due to federal felony charges involving guns and taxes. Furthermore, it overturns previous commitments made by the president not to utilize the presidential powers for the advantage of his family members in extraordinary circumstances.
As a gamer, I’ve been keeping an eye on the news about Hunter Biden. Previously, the Democratic president had made it clear he wouldn’t be granting a pardon or commutation for his son’s sentences following convictions in Delaware and California. However, things seem to have taken a turn recently, with the potential punishment for Hunter approaching soon, following his trial conviction on gun charges and guilty plea on tax offenses. This shift happens just under two months before President-elect Trump is due to re-enter the White House.
This brings an end to a prolonged legal dispute for the president’s son, who openly announced in December 2020 – a month following Joe Biden’s 2020 election win – that he was under federal investigation.
In June, Biden unequivocally stated he would not grant a pardon or commute the sentence for his son, as his son stood trial on gun charges in Delaware. He said, “I will respect the verdict of the jury. I will uphold this and I will not issue him a pardon.
Only a few days following Donald Trump’s election win on November 8th, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre made it clear that there would be no pardon or clemency for the younger Biden. She had been asked this question several times before, and her consistent response was negative.
On Sunday night, Biden declared that he had granted a pardon to his son Hunter, asserting that the legal proceedings against him were politically charged and an instance of injustice.
As a supporter, I’d rephrase it this way: “I believe the accusations against my son came after some political adversaries in Congress stirred them up as a means to undermine me and my campaign. A fair-minded individual, given the facts of Hunter’s cases, would conclude that he was targeted solely because he is my child.
Biden mentioned that he believes Americans can comprehend the reasoning behind such a choice, as both a father and a President made it. He stated he reached this conclusion over the weekend, having just celebrated Thanksgiving with Hunter and his family on Nantucket, Massachusetts.
In June, he was found guilty in a Delaware federal court for committing three felonies related to buying a firearm in 2018. According to the prosecution, he falsified a federal form at that time by stating that he was not illegally using or dependent on drugs.
Originally scheduled for a trial in September regarding allegations of unpaid taxes amounting to over $1.4 million, he unexpectedly decided to admit guilt for both minor and serious offenses instead. This decision came just hours before the process of selecting the jury was about to start.
Hunter Biden admitted guilt in the case, choosing to do so in order to shield his family from further distress and humiliation following the public revelation of intimate details concerning his past battles with crack cocaine addiction during the gun trial.
The potential penalties include a maximum of 17 years imprisonment for tax offenses and as much as 25 years for gun-related charges; however, the suggested federal sentencing guidelines may result in significantly less jail time, and there was a chance that he might serve no prison time at all.
Hunter Biden, in a written statement via email, expressed his deep gratitude for the aid he’s received and pledged to dedicate the new life he’s built towards assisting those who remain ill and afflicted.
During the toughest times of my struggle with addiction, I’ve acknowledged my errors and accepted accountability,” the younger Biden stated. “Unfortunately, these past missteps have been used to embarrass and disgrace not just me, but also my loved ones, for political gain.
A representative from prosecutor David Weiss, who initiated these cases, didn’t provide a response when contacted for comments on Sunday evening.
