As a seasoned movie enthusiast with over three decades of cinematic experiences under my belt, I must say that Apple TV+’s decision to continue “Presumed Innocent” in a new direction is a wise move. The first season was a gripping and engaging watch, with Jake Gyllenhaal delivering an outstanding performance as Rusty Sabich.
In the successful mini-series Presumed Innocent, Apple TV+ found great success, yet should they desire a second season, significant alterations would be necessary. Actor Jake Gyllenhaal likely agreed due to the “limited series” structure, offering him flexibility for other commitments. To keep the series ongoing, Apple TV+ has opted to move on to a fresh narrative and a new protagonist.
By the specified deadline, Apple TV+ and Warner Bros. Television have acquired the rights for an upcoming legal thriller novel titled “Dissection of a Murder,” penned by Jo Murray. This unpublished book will serve as the basis for Season 2 of “Presumed Innocent” following the adaptation of Scott Turrow’s novel for Season 1. The story revolves around Leila Reynolds, a lawyer facing her first murder case, who finds herself in a difficult position when the defendant expresses an interest exclusively in her. This situation is bound to create tension with her husband, who is the prosecutor on the case. True to the genre, Leila harbors secrets of her own, ensuring that Season 2 of “Presumed Innocent” will be just as captivating as its first installment. The novel “Dissection of a Murder” is slated for publication in spring 2026.
Apple TV+ is considering adapting “Dissection of a Murder” as a style guide for Season 2 of “Presumed Innocent,” suggesting they’re aiming for an anthology series structure, much like HBO’s hit show “True Detective.” Earlier plans to maintain some continuity by carrying forward a few characters from Season 1 appear to have been discarded.
Presumed Innocent Was a Big Hit For Apple TV+
Originally penned by David E. Kelley from the 1987 novel of the same name by Turrow and later adapted for film in 1990 starring Harrison Ford, Presumed Innocent revolves around Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor portrayed by Gyllenhaal, who finds himself under suspicion for the murder of his affair partner, a colleague. With its impressive viewership on Apple TV+, making a second season highly anticipated, it’s understandable that fans are eagerly awaiting more. Although Gyllenhaal won’t reprise his role in Season 2, he remains involved as an executive producer, joining forces with Kelley, J.J. Abrams, Dustin Thomason, Matt Tinker and Rachel Rusch Rich.
Besides attracting a large number of viewers on the platform, the series “Presumed Innocent” received positive feedback, earning a 76% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The general consensus was that it’s not inferior to the original film and effectively delivers as an engaging courtroom drama, with many critics appreciating the strong performances of Gyllenhaal and Ruth Negga, who played his wife Barbara Sabich, drawing particular praise.
