As an admirer of captivating storytelling and intriguing characters, I am genuinely thrilled about Prime Video’s upcoming series, Cross. The collaboration between Ben Watkins and Tyler Hodge seems to be a perfect match, with Watkins’ knack for crafting engaging narratives and Hodge’s ability to bring depth and nuance to his roles.
Ben Watkins joins forces with Tyrese Gibson (Hodge) in a creative partnership for the Prime Video series adaptation of ‘Cross’. In this role, Watkins serves as both showrunner and executive producer. He’s renowned for his exceptional work as an EP, particularly on the TV shows ‘Burn Notice’, ‘Hand of God’, and ‘Truth Be Told’. Watkins believes Hodge brings a unique charm to the character of Alex Cross that will captivate fans. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Watkins praised Hodge for his promising portrayal.
In my estimation, I felt there was a chance he could add an air of confidence, attractiveness, and a touch of rebellion. However, it was crucial for me to find someone who had a deep intellectual hunger as well.
Hodge added to the conversation by discussing his take on the character:
I’ve witnessed many aspects personally that I aspire to adopt, both as a participant and a spectator. These are the elements I found captivating, the ones I wanted to experience. There was a character who was impressive, composed, and commanding in their presence.
Expect the Unexpected from Prime Video’s Cross
Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of James Patterson’s works doesn’t face the same challenges as some earlier adaptations did, such as those starring Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman in “Kiss the Girls” (1997) and “Along Came a Spider” (2001). Unlike these films based on the 1995 and 1993 novels of the same names, respectively, the current project led by Aldis Hodge doesn’t follow Patterson’s beloved character and stories in quite the same manner. As showrunner Ben Watkins explained to Entertainment Weekly:
As I delved into reading the books and revisiting the films, I began compiling a list of aspects I believed weren’t fully portrayed in the movies. If all you’ve seen are the films, you wouldn’t be aware of certain details like John Sampson’s character. However, once you dive into the books, it becomes evident that their relationship is rich, fulfilling, complex, and reassuring. They are deeply connected, a bond that can be relied upon. I knew this was an element we had to capture for the series.
In his conversation with TV Insider, Hodge emphasized the significance of his on-screen bond with Isaiah Mustafa, who plays Alex Cross’s jumbo chili dog-eating partner, Mr. John Sampson. Hodge highlighted the role that Sampson and other key characters play in the story.
In the books, John Sampson, played by Isaiah Mustafa, serves as both friend and confidant to Cross. When Cross becomes overly consumed by his mania, it’s John who helps steer him back on track. John was brought up by his grandmother, affectionately known as Nana Mama (Juanita Jennings), as his parents tragically passed away at a young age.
Currently, she assists in nurturing Damon (Caleb Elijah) and Jannie (Melody Hurd), his children. Interestingly, Cross has a thriving community in D.C., which I find fascinating. He takes on the role of neighborhood watchman in the area where he was raised, allowing us to portray the kind of individuals residing there.
Beginning on Thursday, November 14th, you’ll have the chance to stream or binge-watch all eight episodes of Cross on Prime Video. For enthusiasts of the character from the books, there’s even more Alex Cross to look forward to, as Season 2 of Cross has already been commissioned, ahead of the eagerly awaited premiere of Season 1.
