Prime Video‘s Biblical series, House of David, has proven to be so successful that, just three weeks after its debut, the streaming service has already renewed it for a Season 2. Starring Michael Iskander. Ali Suliman, Stephen Lang, and Martyn Ford, House of David traces the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride, and the unlikely, outcast teenager who is prophesied to succeed him.
Per Deadline, House of David amassed 22 million viewers in the first 17 days following the three-episode premiere on Feb. 27. It now sits in the Top 10 of new series debuts here in the United States, which made it an easy decision to renew the show for a second outing. “Jon Erwin and Jon Gunn’s compelling creative vision has solidified our belief in the series, and we are excited to deliver more of the story to our customers,” said Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios, Vernon Sanders, in a statement released today. He added:
We eagerly anticipate continuing our partnership with The Wonder Project, as we broaden our collection to include shows that focus on religious themes.
Kicking off on February 27th, the first season of House of David, consisting of eight episodes, will air weekly until its finale on April 3rd. The second season will see the return of most key cast members and delve into the fallout from the battle between David and Goliath, as well as David’s ascension to the throne. As he grapples with palace intrigue, family rivalry, and a budding romance, David embarks on a journey towards his destiny and discovers what it takes to become a great leader.
“We are humbled by the extraordinary reaction this show has earned from the faith audience worldwide,” said creators Erwin and Gunn. “Thanks to them and our partners at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, Wonder Project will bring more of the Bible and this epic saga to a global audience. Congratulations to our incredible cast and crew.”
Fans Are Loving ‘House of David’
Thus far, House of David has managed to achieve a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes of 60%, but its Popcornmeter sits much higher at 89%, proving that fans are definitely enjoying the Biblical series. “Very well done, said user JC. “Yes it’s a biblical story, but it’s not preaching or created to convert, it’s simply a very well put together series.” Asher B adds:
“House of David is simply a thrill to watch. It brings the story of David in the Bible into an awakened entertaining watch. I’ve only watched the first two episodes and they already keep me on the tips of my toes. Although the show is not fully Biblical in all its scenes, it captures the story’s characters, setting, and culture beautifully tied into one! It also reveals an in-depth analysis of Saul’s fall from the throne.”
With that being said, critics remain divided on the series, with MovieWeb’s own Matt Mahler calling it “stretched out, overdramatized, and, yes, anticlimactic” in his review, while at the same time noting that “the things that are fabricated eventually turn out to create a pretty interesting story of power, pride, and politics.” Joel Keller from Decider also weighed in on the show, saying, “none of the characters are made more interesting than how they’re depicted in the Bible.”
There’s no word yet on when House of David Season 2 will head into production, so a premiere date has yet to be set. In the meantime, you can catch Season 1 streaming now on Prime Video, and be sure to watch our interview above with stars Michael Iskander (David) and Martyn Ford (Goliath).
