Canadian production company, Sphere Media, has acquired the rights for “Dancing With Diana: A Memoir” penned by Anne Allan, a Scottish-Canadian dancer who secretly tutored Princess Diana in dance and collaborated with her on the iconic “Uptown Girl” performance at Covent Garden. For the first time, Sphere Media and Glasgow-based Two Rivers Media have joined forces for a co-production deal to create a 90-minute feature documentary based on the memoir, published recently. On Wednesday, they announced their plans.
Worldwide distribution of the documentary will be handled by Sphere Abacus.
This documentary will trace the nine-year span starting in early 1981 when Allan acted as Diana’s secret dance mentor. During hundreds of weekly lessons at a private studio, their bond deepened while Diana navigated her meteoric fame, joyous motherhood, tumultuous marriage, and battle with bulimia. As both confidante and instructor, Allan was privy to intimate details about the princess’s life, trials, interests, and triumphs.
Allan expressed his excitement: “I’m delighted that Sphere Media and Two Rivers Media have decided to adapt Dancing with Diana. Being a Scot living in Canada, this collaboration means a lot to me, and I can hardly wait to see it come to life!
She mentioned: “While I was with the Princess, I had the great fortune to observe not only Diana’s deep passion for dance, but also a more intimate side of her. I hope that viewers of the documentary will find this new perspective intriguing and gain a deeper insight into just how extraordinary she truly was.
The creators guarantee that the documentary will showcase exclusive archival content such as unseen photos, personal mementos, and letters from the princess. It also plans to present fresh interviews with royal confidants, famous personalities, top-tier celebrities, and some of Diana’s dearest friends.
Using Allan’s recollections as a guide, viewers will be led on a journey chronicling Diana’s evolution from timid newlywed into a globally renowned figure – a woman who dared to dance in front of millions at London’s Royal Opera House to Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl,” partnering with Wayne Sleep, and gracefully stepping onto the floor with John Travolta at The White House, as the companies describe it.
