Producer Names Shared Christian Theme in Ordinary Angels, White Bird & More

As a film enthusiast with a heart for heartwarming stories and a soft spot for Christmas movies, I must say that Andrew Erwin has truly outdone himself with his latest production, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.” Having grown up on classics like “It’s a Wonderful Life” and Frank Capra’s masterpieces, it is refreshing to see a modern film that embodies the same spirit of redemption and community.

Titles: Ordinary Angels, Unsung Heroes, White Bird, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

Erwin explained to us, “Redemption is a central element in the narratives we create.” If you examine the four movies that culminate in [The Best Christmas Pageant Ever] by Dallas Jenkins, you’ll find that redemption is the main theme. Each film was directed differently, but they all share the same essence – a heartfelt message about redemption. Erwin further commented:

“And I think, really, we did save the best for last. This is one that I think has the potential to be a Christmas classic, you know, in the vein of movies that I love to watch every year, that were done by Frank Capra, like
It’s a Wonderful Life
. It just has that heart
. And I think that’s a very mainstream kind of approach, that’s universally appealing, no matter where you come from — but it does speak to faith in a very organic, specific way, and it earns the right to be heard. This one delivers, so we’re excited.”

Dallas Jenkins on the Benefit of Working with Comedians Like Judy Greer & Pete Holmes

In the interview, Director Jenkins chatted with Erwin and shared insights about the delightful process of casting humor powerhouses (Greer and Holmes) in their family-oriented holiday movie, which includes both lighthearted comedy and poignant, emotional scenes. “Judy and Pete are exceptional talents with a knack for making people laugh,” Jenkins stated. “They’re two of the most naturally funny individuals I’ve ever collaborated with.” Occasionally, he had to step out from behind the camera and remind them that they were on set, working against the clock as producer Andrew Erwin kept tabs on the time. Despite these occasional reminders, Jenkins added that this created a wonderfully vibrant atmosphere on set. Visitors to the set often commented that it was a unique and special environment.

Jenkins elaborated on why working with comedians for big-screen adaptations is advantageous: “I’ve consistently felt that standup comics and comedians in general possess a distinctive grasp of timing, rhythm, and emotion. This becomes evident when you find yourself laughing or enjoying the movie from an amusing angle, as it elicits your emotions.” He further noted:

When we reach the emotional climax of the movie where the performers, even children capable of delivering humor, skillfully balance their act between laughter and tears, it’s a moving sight. This powerful effect might be due to their exceptional comedic skills, which make the drama and emotions resonate deeply with the audience.

From Lionsgate, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is now playing in theaters.
