As a seasoned gamer with an eye for fashion trends and a deep appreciation for the creative industries, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming launch of Project Runway Africa! Having witnessed the incredible rise of African fashion on the global stage, it’s heartening to see such a renowned platform like Project Runway finally making its way to our continent.

Africa is getting its own Project Runway.

Next year will see the debut of a fresh installment of the popular fashion design contest series, “Project Runway Africa”. This exciting event aims to shine a spotlight on up-and-coming designers from various regions throughout Africa.

Through their specialized production company Take Two Media, media company Takeout Media and broadcast network What Network are set to create an African adaptation of the series, having secured the format rights from international producer and distributor Fremantle.

Chichi Nwoko, one of the co-executive producers of “Project Runway Africa”, stated that this program is not merely a television series; it’s a significant cultural event. The show aims to shine a spotlight on Africa’s rapidly transforming fashion scene and provide designers with valuable mentorship from experts in the field.

Nwoko stated that Africa’s fashion industry is rapidly expanding, driven by an energetic, youthful demographic and profound cultural influences. With ‘Project Runway Africa’, we aim to establish a stage that honors the continent’s endless creativity, giving designers the opportunity to realize their ideas and express their distinctive perspectives to audiences not only in Africa but globally.

Co-executive producer Elijah Affi stated, “We’re building a stage to exhibit how African designers reinvent worldwide fashion through their distinctive viewpoints and cultural abundance. This is not just about television; it’s about amplifying African voices in the global fashion dialogue and creating opportunities for our gifted designers to scale new peaks.

The contest is for fashion designers from Africa who are between the ages of 21 and 40. Information about the initial season, such as where it will be filmed, is currently secret. For more information, check out projectrunway.com.

Originating from Spyglass Media Group, the reality TV show called Project Runway debuted in the U.S. on Bravo in 2004 and has aired for 20 seasons across different networks – it ran for 11 seasons on Lifetime from 2009 to 2017, then was revived on Freeform, Disney+, and Hulu for its 21st season, set to air next year. The show has inspired over 30 international versions of itself.

The program boasts an impressive history of fostering and propelling design careers; many past victors like Christian Siriano, Irina Shabayeva, and Leanne Marshall have subsequently established thriving fashion businesses.

Anahita Kheder, Fremantle’s executive vice president of EMEA Formats and Licensing and International, stated that the new chapter of ‘Project Runway’ in Africa will provide a platform for designers to establish their presence on a global scale.
