In the upcoming Disney+ series, Daredevil: Born Again, showrunner Dario Scardapane hinted at the powerful comeback of Jon Bernthal’s character, Frank Castle/The Punisher. This revival also includes the return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Elden Henson as Franklin “Foggy” Nelson, and Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming return of The Punisher! Although the specifics of his comeback storyline are being kept under lock and key for now, one thing is certain – Frank Castle remains as sharp and resilient as ever. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Daredevil: Born Again’s showrunner, Scardapane, shared that working with Jon Bernthal once more was truly rewarding, given their previous collaboration on The Punisher where Scardapane served as a writer and executive producer throughout its successful two-season run.
Working with Jon and working with that character is always really intense, really satisfying.
Disney+ recently unveiled a sneak peek showing Jon Bernthal reprising his role as The Punisher, but until now, it was unknown how this skull-donning vigilante would fit into the next installment of Daredevil’s storyline. In an interview, Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum offered some insights on the character’s return, hinting that Matt Murdock will seek out Frank Castle for a mutual aid once again.
Matt seeks out Frank since there’s a task he’s hesitant to perform himself. Frank, who can be as forceful as a bull in a china shop, immediately tackles the issue at hand. As the season progresses, particularly towards its climax, Frank’s appearances become increasingly unconventional.
Winderbaum’s remarks are certain to fan the flames of anticipation for Hell’s Kitchen, as viewers eagerly speculate about potential plot developments in the upcoming MCU show. Previously, Castle was seen aiding Murdock in battling the lethal ninja group, the Hand, within a Daredevil-centric series. Subsequently, Castle further immersed himself in the Punisher role when he launched his own standalone series for two seasons, only to have it abruptly ended by Netflix.
Why Was ‘The Punisher’ Canceled by Netflix?
On February 18, 2019, Netflix chose to discontinue ‘The Punisher’, a mere month after Season 2 was made available on their streaming platform. While no specific reasons were provided for the show’s cancellation, there might have been some internal struggles arising from Disney launching its own streaming service, potentially leading to conflicts that influenced Netflix’s decision to end its partnership with Marvel productions.
In 2022, Netflix parted ways with “The Punisher” and other Marvel TV shows from its library. This was because Disney reacquired the rights to these titles, allowing them to bring these beloved characters back into action in new projects featuring the popular quintet: The Punisher, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.
Some of these characters have resurfaced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the termination of their Netflix shows. Charlie Cox’s Daredevil has made appearances in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “She-Hulk: Lawyer” and “Echo,” but he will now take on a significant role in “Daredevil: Born Again,” collaborating with some well-known figures from the past. The upcoming series is set to debut on Disney+ on March 4, 2025, as part of Phase Five of the MCU.
