'Putting On The Suit Was A Big Deal To Me.' Jared Leto Admits His Tron: Ares Costume Weighed 45 Pounds, But He Still Seems Into It

As a gamer with over two decades of immersion in the digital world, the anticipation for Disney’s “Tron: Ares” has been an exhilarating rollercoaster ride. Having grown up with the original Tron films and later experiencing the visually stunning “Tron: Legacy,” I can confidently say that this upcoming installment promises to be a masterpiece.

Following more than a decade in production, Disney’s “Tron: Ares” is now set for theater release. Fans of the science fiction film series have been eagerly anticipating this moment since the news broke about the third “Tron” movie finishing production. With an impressive cast consisting of Jared Leto, Greta Lee, and Jeff Bridges, the team is now ready to discuss their work on the film. Notably, Leto recently disclosed that his costume weighed a substantial 45 pounds, but he found the effort worthwhile given his past successes.

Over the weekend at the D23 Expo, I got a glimpse of some exciting early footage from “Tron: Ares”, and let me tell you, it was a huge hit! This movie promises to delve into intriguing themes about AI and technological advancements, which makes it perfectly timed for today’s sci-fi fans. After the trailer dropped, the cast of “Tron 3” graced the stage to discuss their upcoming 2025 film and the unique experience of working on such an iconic franchise. Jared Leto shared some personal insights, explaining why he found donning his costume a significant moment for him, despite the fact that the elaborate suit was quite heavy. During the D23 festivities, he shared this with People:

Wearing that suit was quite significant for me… They constructed an extraordinary suit, one I believe could have been useful in specific situations, similar to donning full body armor. It weighs approximately 45 pounds, yet remains flexible. When you slip it on, it makes you feel like a warrior, and the name Ares, being that of a warrior god, is fitting.

Jared Leto is known for fully immersing himself into a character, earning him the label of a “method actor.” When donning the armor for his role in ‘Tron,’ it’s likely that the suit was an essential part of his preparation, enabling him to truly sense the burden of the armor as his character would within the Grid. Given the active nature of Leto’s performance as Morbius, a flexible costume was crucial. Initial glimpses of the outfit suggest an intense, fitting look for the Tron universe; thus, the heft seems justified, at least aesthetically speaking.

In addition to the digital elements, the physical costumes worn by characters in the film Tron: Ares have a striking presence on screen. The vibrant Tron suits from the original movie significantly enhance its visual appeal and contribute to a sense of authenticity (considering it’s a film set in a digital universe). Previous movies have employed CGI costumes for their characters, such as Iron Man’s armored suit and the MCU Spider-Man suit. While CGI can work effectively, having tangible costumes creates a more captivating visual experience and immerses viewers more deeply. I appreciate that Tron: Ares opted for physical costumes, even though post-production visual effects may be added to the suits later.

Although movie armor may appear impressive on-screen, it’s historically not known for being particularly comfortable. For instance, Emily Blunt has admitted that the suits in “Edge of Tomorrow” led to persistent back pain after filming. Similarly, Florence Pugh found her chain mail costume for “Dune: Part Two” uncomfortable to wear. However, these cumbersome costumes serve a purpose and are crucial for creating an authentic atmosphere within a fictional world. It’s admirable that Jared Leto accepted this challenging aspect of filming “Tron: Ares,” and I eagerly anticipate the spectacular glow of those suits in the movie.

Looking forward to catching “Tron: Ares” in theaters on October 10, 2025? Until then, delve back into its earlier versions – “Tron: Legacy” and the original 1982 film – with a Disney+ subscription!
