Quest Love To Direct '50 Years of SNL Music' Documentary

As a seasoned gamer who’s witnessed more SNL episodes than I care to count (and that’s saying something), I’m absolutely thrilled about this upcoming documentary! Growing up, I remember waiting eagerly for Saturdays just to catch my favorite sketches and musical performances. The fact that Oscar-winner Questlove will be directing it makes this a must-watch event for me.

Acclaimed filmmaker Questlove has been appointed to helm a fresh documentary centering on the musical history of Saturday Night Live, spanning over half a century. Titled “Ladies & Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music,” this three-hour special is scheduled to commemorate the musical legacy at Saturday Night Live, reaching back five decades for NBC.

According to the project’s tagline, the film will showcase lesser-known narratives surrounding iconic, revolutionary, and headline-grabbing musical performances, skits, and guest appearances from the past half-century. It will additionally include over 50 interviews with some of the entertainment industry’s heavyweights such as Bad Bunny, DJ Breakout, Elvis Costello, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish and Finneas, Dave Grohl, Debbie Harry & Chris Stein, Mick Jagger, Dua Lipa, Darryl DMC McDaniels, Tom Morello, Kacey Musgraves, Olivia Rodrigo, MC Sha-Rack, Paul Simon, Chris Stapleton, Justin Timberlake, Lee Ving and Jack White. Also interviewed will be various artists like Lorne Michaels, the creator of SNL, along with current and past cast members and creatives including Fred Armisen, Conan O’Brien, Eli Brueggemann, Jane Curtin, Jimmy Fallon, Al Franken, Josiah Gluck, Bill Hader, Steve Higgins, Marci Klein, Melanie Malone, Tom Malone, Mary Ellen Matthews, Eddie Murphy, Ego Nwodim, Liz Patrick, Leon Pendarvis, Lenny Pickett, Joe Piscopo, Andy Samberg, Brian Siedlecki, Akiva Schaffer, Paul Shaffer, Sarah Sherman, Howard Shore, Robert Smigel, Jorma Taccone, Kenan Thompson, Maya Rudolph, Hal Willner and Bowen Yang.

In a statement, Questlove described the project as follows: “Many people are familiar with the most iconic Saturday Night Live performances, such as those by Elvis Costello, Prince, or the Beastie Boys, but these are merely the tip of a vast iceberg. Sifting through the extraordinary archival footage felt like traveling in a time machine – a DeLorean or otherwise. I’m thrilled that I embarked on this journey and can now share it with everyone.” The three-hour special will debut on the network at 8 p.m. EST on January 27, and will be available for streaming the following day on Peacock.
