Quilts and Cats of Calico review – “A cosy feline-fueled board game”

  • Create and dress up custom cats
  • Easy-to-learn, but hard-to-master gameplay
  • Attract cats to your quilt by creating their preferred shapes

If you love curling up with your purring pals during leisurely afternoons, stitching away at quilts, then you should definitely explore Quilts and Cats of Calico! This mobile game is inspired by the classic board game, Calico. In this charming and cozy adventure, you’ll be tasked with crafting a quilt using an array of colorful fabric scraps. Gain cute badges and unlock new feline friends as you create stunning quilts for the residents of Tomkitty Town.

How To Play Quilts and Cats of Calico

You can have two fabric scraps in your hand at a time. Place one on the quilt board to sew it on. Placing three scraps of the same colour next to each other earns you a button worth three points. Earn a button of each colour to nab a rainbow button.

As a gamer, I come across these unique game pieces called Design Goal tiles. These babies earn me extra points if I strategically place my fabric scrap tokens around them, ensuring they match the color or pattern specified. For example, I might need to enclose a design goal tile with all different colored or patterned pieces, or group three of the same color together around it. It’s all about planning and execution!

Additionally, you can accumulate points by enticing cats to nap on your blanket. Each feline tends to favor two distinct patterns, which are displayed below their picture. Arranging an area of the blanket that resembles the shape or size preferred by the cat will attract them to the blanket and reward you with a Cat Token.

Even though cats might have similar preferences in terms of form or scale, only a single feline is attracted to a particular quilt square. To secure a match, you may need to collect a specific amount of cat-themed tokens and buttons. You can always revisit the rules by clicking on ‘Game Rules’ located under settings.

Help Townsfolk in Quilts and Cats of Calico Story Mode

In story mode, you are a talented quilter visiting your Aunt Agatha in Tomkitty Town, a village known for revering cats. You’ll traverse the town, brilliantly represented by a quilt, meeting villagers, sewing quilts, and aiding the townspeople. Also, you’ll compete against the local factories’ new iron loom, which can rapidly weave new quilts.

The cozy, quilt-making missions in Story mode and the adorable hand-drawn characters you’ll encounter make for a relaxing gaming experience, but there was one hiccup: when I attempted to load my save, I got stuck on an infinite loading screen. Unfortunately, this meant I had to start from scratch. Fortunately, I didn’t face that problem again.

Beyond Story mode, Quilts of Cats and Calico features both solo and multiplayer modes in which you can enjoy a round at your leisure. Solo mode offers a more laid-back experience in which you play against AI, while the cross-platform multiplayer mode lets you compete against friends or random players in ranked matches.

Quilts of Cats and Calico Lets You Create New Cats

Admittedly, my favourite feature is the cat editor. After choosing a name for your new feline friend, you’ll have the option to customize aspects of your new kitty’s appearance such as snout length, tail fluffiness, general fluffiness and ear rolling. Next, you’ll customize its fur colours and patterns. You can use up to two fur patterns per cat to give them a more distinct look. Finally, you can dress up your creation in charming hats, sweaters, and accessories. Further, you can go back and edit any of your cats at any time.

A tranquil and peaceful mobile board game titled “Quilts and Cats of Calico” is ideal for both cat enthusiasts and quilters. Despite encountering a frustrating bug during gameplay, my overall experience was pleasant. You’ll find joy in designing new cats using the editor and assisting the townspeople of TomKitty Town. The calming music, vivid visuals, and easy-to-grasp mechanics contribute to a relaxing board game atmosphere that resembles a state of zen.
