At the 2025 Oscars, Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg, and Queen Latifah paid tribute to Quincy Jones, a renowned figure in pop and R&B music who also made significant strides in film music with his pioneering and boundary-pushing scores.
Speaking about the late Jones, who passed away in November at 91 years old, Oprah Winfrey remarked: “Upon hearing the news, one immediately thinks of a musical prodigy, and rightfully so.” She recalled his collaborations with artists such as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Ray Charles, and his significant role in the creation of ‘We Are The World’… Yet, beyond his musical accomplishments, our cherished Q had an equally profound impact on cinema.
From the Oscars stage, Goldberg stated that when discussing exceptional achievements, we’re referring to Quincy.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “Jones is the one who kick-started my acting journey. He was the one who spotted me for ‘The Color Purple’, which marked my debut on the silver screen. Quincy, oh man, he embodied love in its truest form, living vibrantly and channeling that energy into others and his work.
Jones’ credit is featured in several Oscar-winning movies, dating back to 1967 when he first received a nomination. Some of these include ‘The Wiz’, where Queen Latifah delivered a captivating golden and shimmering rendition of “Ease on Down the Road.
Movies featuring music by John Williams, such as “In Cold Blood,” “The Getaway,” “The Italian Job,” and “The Color Purple,” are also part of his extensive portfolio. In “The Color Purple,” he not only composed but also produced the score. This film, directed by Steven Spielberg, received 11 Academy Award nominations, with best original score being one of them, showcasing Williams’ profound ability to express deep emotions through music.
