R. Kelly, now imprisoned for 30 years, has requested his release, alleging that prison authorities tried to bribe an inmate to take his life.
On Tuesday, the troubled R&B performer petitioned a court to grant him freedom from the Federal Correctional Facility in Butner, North Carolina. He’s currently incarcerated following convictions in two distinct legal proceedings for numerous sex offenses, each carrying a significant sentence.
It is stated in the motion that Kelly is asserting a prison officer unlawfully obtained and took a sequence of phone conversations and emails between the ex-musician, a woman, and their attorney. Moreover, he alleges that a previous cellmate secretly acquired attorney-client correspondence and passed these letters on to prosecutors prior to his trial in New York.
According to Kelly’s claim, prison authorities are said to have attempted to arrange for his assassination in order to prevent information from becoming public. In the document, Kelly asserts that another prisoner, belonging to the Aryan Brotherhood gang, informed him that he was sent to FCI Butner by corrections officials with instructions to kill Kelly. When this wasn’t carried out, Kelly alleges that the Aryan Brotherhood member also faced threats against his own life.
Beau Brindle, Kelly’s lawyer, stated in a release to The Hollywood Reporter, “Kelly’s life is under threat due to his choice to speak out against the misuse of his constitutional rights by dishonest prosecutors who manipulate Bureau of Prisons officers and cooperating witnesses to carry out these abuses.
When it was discovered he was exposing corruption within the charges against him in his federal cases, a white supremacist linked to the Aryan Brotherhood was dispatched to kill him. To prevent them from evading justice, we are submitting our motion.
In response, Billboard reported that the prosecution submitted court documents asking the judge to dismiss Kelly’s filing. In their submission, they called Kelly a serial sexual predator. They stated in the document that he filmed himself sexually abusing children, thereby creating child pornography, ensuring his abuse would endure forever. This ongoing abuse and harassment is evident in Kelly’s most recent court filing.
In 2021, Kelly was found guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking in New York, and in 2022, he was convicted of child pornography and soliciting minors for sexual acts in Chicago. He was given a 30-year prison term for the New York charges and a 20-year sentence for the Chicago charges, with these sentences running concurrently (meaning they will be served at the same time).
