Radhikka Madan shares her take on nepotism and its unfair part; 'unko seekhane k liye 2-3 filmein aur mil jaati hai'

As an ardent follower of Bollywood and a firm believer in fairness, I find Radhikka Madan‘s words resonating deeply within me. Her experiences echo those of many outsiders who have dared to dream big and challenge the status quo.

Radhika Madan, having worked extensively in Bollywood, understands that nepotism is common within the film industry. In a recent discussion about this topic, she pointed out that actors with connections in the industry often receive numerous opportunities to refine their acting skills, while those like herself, who are not connected, may be dropped from films after making even one mistake.

Radhikka Madan, recognized for roles in films such as Angrezi Medium, Sarfira, and others, began her acting journey in 2018 with Pataakha. In an interview with Shubhankar Mishra, she openly discussed the prevalence of nepotism in the Hindi film industry. She acknowledged its existence but also emphasized that a ‘star kid’ often gets an opportunity to work on 2-3 movies even if their first film didn’t succeed. In her words, “They are given multiple films to learn with people encouraging them for improvements in each movie.” (This implies that they get more chances to learn and improve due to encouragement from others.)

However, for someone without connections or relatives in the entertainment industry, it’s not the norm as described. Madan conveyed that filmmakers often view them as inadequate actors who were merely given a chance, which is then swiftly taken away, leading to a sense of urgency and the emergence of survival instincts due to what seems like a matter of life or death.

She acknowledged that if she makes a mistake, she may be replaced, as opportunities for her to learn acting in multiple films are limited. She further explained that outsiders like herself are typically expected to master their craft before stepping onto film sets, whereas insiders are given more leeway and are believed to improve with each subsequent movie. What she finds unfair is this discrepancy in expectations. However, since this phenomenon exists across industries, she accepts it but can’t deny that it’s a reality in Bollywood.
