As a devoted fan of “Young Sheldon,” I was absolutely heartbroken during the emotional finale in May 2024. The sad and unexpected death of George Cooper Sr., portrayed brilliantly by Lance Barber, left me in tears. It was an end to an era that spanned seven years and built up so much emotion.
In May 2024, “Young Sheldon” concluded its seventh season with a poignant and emotional finale. The long-awaited and heart-wrenching death of George Cooper Sr. (Lance Barber), a pivotal character from “The Big Bang Theory,” occurred in Episode 12, titled “A New Home and a Traditional Texas Torture.” The passing left an indelible mark on the series’ universe. The following episode, named “Funeral,” portrayed the aftermath of this tragic loss. Lastly, the final installment, entitled “Memoir,” brought the sitcom to a close as Sheldon (Iain Armitage) embarked on a new journey in California.
Fans have been deeply affected by the recent episodes, with Star Raegan Revord adding to their emotional experience by sharing untold stories from the set of the sitcom on social media. Revord, who portrayed Missy, posted ten photos on Instagram, captioned “I’m no longer holding back these images.” Among them were pictures from George’s funeral and one depicting the heart-wrenching filming of the Cooper family dinner without George. In that photo, Barber is seen watching in the background with a sorrowful expression, later breaking down while embracing Zoe Perry after wrapping up. These behind-the-scenes glimpses intensified the sadness felt during that scene.

Reaching the final episode marked a significant milestone for the “Young Sheldon” cast, who have grown close like a real family. According to Barber, speaking with ET post-production, we experienced a range of intense emotions and even shed some tears – typical reactions after spending seven years collaborating on this remarkable journey.
This wasn’t Lance Barber’s only time on set after George’s death
I was a devoted fan of “Young Sheldon,” and although Lance Barber’s character had left before the series ended, he stayed on set for the entire filming process. He even made an appearance at George’s funeral scene. Intrigued by this role, I was surprised to find out that Barber had asked to lie in the coffin during the church scene filming. You can see him there at the beginning of the episode.
Barber shared that part of his motivation for wanting to be in the coffin during filming was to disrupt the solemn funeral scene by playing pranks on his co-stars. Yet, he wasn’t able to execute his plan due to being struck with strong emotions instead. In an interview with TV Insider post-shooting, he confessed, “I had numerous pranks prepared in the casket. I had a fart machine, I had a mustache, and I had some quirky teeth … I intended to spoil at least a few takes with some amusing antics.”
Barber didn’t carry out his pranks, but he stayed on set and contributed to the funeral scene in another manner. After filming the casket scenes, Barber changed costumes and sat in the second-from-last pew of the church to observe the eulogies. Most “Young Sheldon” viewers likely missed this notable cameo. In fact, Barber portrayed a grieving parishioner named Georgina, who appears during Georgie’s (Montana Jordan) eulogy. Barber underwent a significant character makeover, including glasses, a white wig, and a purple floral dress.
