Rajkummar Rao recalls returning to Newton sets right after performing mother's last rites: ‘I am strong but... main ro raha hota tha continuous’

As a fervent admirer of Rajkummar Rao’s talent and his unwavering dedication to his craft, it’s heartbreaking to witness the personal turmoil he has had to endure. His recent revelation about the passing of his mother and his struggle to cope with the loss while continuing to work is a testament to his strength and resilience.

In recent times, Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao has been garnering attention for positive reasons, mainly due to a series of successful movies he’s been in. Yet, the spotlight shifted as he disclosed an intimate and sorrowful incident – the news of his mother’s passing, which came from Patralekhaa. He confessed that he struggled following his mother’s death, and shared that he returned to the film set of Newton straight after performing her last rites in 2017. During this time, he was overpowered by emotions and found himself shedding tears continuously on set.

In an open chat with Samdish Bhatia on Mauj Masti, I, Rajkummar Rao, shared a heartfelt story from the set of one of my films. The scene required me to sit in a booth and step outside afterwards. As I was leaving, I noticed someone running towards me, which piqued my curiosity. Despite my mother’s recent health issues – she was only 54 at the time – I hadn’t foreseen anything grave happening.

Rajkummar shared that he found it strange when someone was running frantically through the forest. Upon encountering this person, they handed him a message saying Patralekhaa wished to talk with him. At that instant, a chilling suspicion arose—that perhaps his father had died, as the man’s facial expression, filled with distress, suggested something catastrophic had occurred.

In simpler terms, after learning about the tragic news from Patralekhaa, the actor from Street 2 felt as if everything was crumbling around him. Since Newton was a production with limited resources, he fretted that his departure might cause disruptions. He immediately informed the team and promised to return shortly. Despite the filmmakers advising him to take more time for mourning, he opted to perform his mother’s last rites and then returned to the set to carry on filming.

I found myself back on the set, convinced that I’d hold up; after all, I’m quite strong. But alas, my resolve crumbled like sandcastles in a storm. My closest friend, Anish, the sound designer, was there miraculously, and he lent me his unwavering support.

Rajkummar Rao shared a personal sentiment, expressing regret that he didn’t get to spend more quality time with his parents. Reflecting on life, the actor wished things could have been different if his mother were still alive. He lamented that he couldn’t fulfill her dream of meeting Amitabh Bachchan in Mumbai, a person she deeply admired. Yet, he finds solace in feeling her presence with him as he recalls their shared memories.

In terms of his career, Rajkummar Rao is currently basking in the glory of his successful family comedy release titled “Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video”. He is co-starring alongside Triptii Dimri in this production.
