As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for the rich tapestry of Indian cinema and its iconic characters, I find myself intrigued by Mukesh Khanna’s perspective on the casting of Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming film Ramayana. With his extensive experience in portraying Bhishma Pitamah in the popular television series Bharat Ek Khoj, it is only natural for Khanna to have a keen eye for authenticity and reverence when it comes to such revered characters.
Actor Mukesh Khanna from Mahabharat has voiced his apprehensions about Ranbir Kapoor being chosen to play Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming film, Ramayana. He believes that the roles Ranbir has taken on before, particularly in Animal, might impact viewers’ perception of him effectively portraying the venerable character of Lord Ram. Furthermore, he stated, ‘The actor you are considering for the role, his life should not contradict Lord Rama.’
In a chat with Mid-Day, Mukesh Khanna was questioned about Ranbir Kapoor’s selection as Lord Rama. At first, the seasoned actor held back from expressing an opinion, fearing that any comment could lead to accusations of meddling in everyone and everything, a situation he had experienced before which tarnished his image.
He said, ‘Aap jo actor ko cast kar rahe ho, unki zindagi bhi Ram ke against nahi honi chahiye. Humare Kapoorn(Ranbir Kapoor) khaandaan ke chirag hain, bohot achhe actor hain. Unki life bhi aisi nahi hai jo aap Ram ke against bol sakein. He’s just done Animal, and his negative personality was highlighted in that movie. I hope that doesn’t disturb this.”
(The actor you are casting should not have a life that goes against Ram’s character. Our Kapoor (Ranbir Kapoor) family has shining stars, and he is a great actor. His life is also not such that you can say it goes against Ram. He’s just done Animal, and his negative personality was highlighted in that movie. I hope that doesn’t affect this.)
Khanna emphasized that if one were to create the Ramayana, comparisons with Arun Govil would be inevitable due to his iconic portrayal. Similarly, if Bhishma Pitamaha is being depicted, comparisons to Mukesh Khanna are unavoidable because he has made an iconic character out of him, regardless of one’s preference.
(I am saying it again, if you make Ramayana, there will be a comparison with Arun Govil, and it will definitely happen. If you make Bhishma Pitamah, there will be a comparison with Mukesh Khanna, whether you like it or not, because he has made an icon of the role.)
Besides Ranbir Kapoor, Nitesh Tiwari’s adaptation of the Ramayana includes Sai Pallavi in the role of Sita. The movie also has Yash in a part, and rumors point to Sunny Deol being chosen as Hanuman, though this hasn’t been officially verified yet.
In 2026, the initial segment of Ramayana will hit theaters for viewing during Diwali, and it’s anticipated that the sequel will premiere in theaters during Diwali 2027.
