The Indian classic tale, Ramayan, has been reimagined into numerous television shows and films throughout the years. However, Ramanand Sagar’s TV series still holds a timeless appeal, despite having been broadcasted many decades ago. Notably, Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi have been cast as Lord Ram and Goddess Sita respectively in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming film adaptation. In an engaging conversation with Siddharth Kannan, esteemed Bollywood actress Dipika Chikhlia Topiwala, famously recognized for her portrayal of Goddess Sita in the TV series Ramayan by Ramanand Sagar, discussed the possibility of joining director Nitesh Tiwari’s forthcoming film adaptation of Ramayana.
The actress remembered being offered the chance to portray Kausalya in a TV adaptation of the Hindu epic. Her husband advised her to follow her gut feeling about the role, while her brother pointed out, “You are recognized as Sita, and you should depart as Sita.” Consequently, she too began considering this perspective, realizing that for several decades, the public has come to know her as Sita Ji.
As she explains, nothing will surpass Sagar’s TV series about the epic. So, instead of trying to alter her image, she declared, “I am Sita and I have embraced that role.” For the last 35 years, she has shouldered the duty of being Sita, so why try to become someone else?
In the course of our conversation, Dipika Chikhlia mentioned that there might be a comeback for her on screen. She disclosed that she had been offered roles in two different films by production companies. However, both roles required her to hold a cigarette, which she declined politely, expressing her surprise at the request: “I can’t believe you’re asking me something like this!
Nitesh Tiwari’s adaptation of Ramayana, a two-part epic, is set to release in theaters over Diwali in 2026 and 2027. Alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi, this production also stars Yash, Sunny Deol, and Kunal Kapoor.
