Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda has expressed his views on the habit of Bollywood to jump on trends without thoughtful consideration. He emphasized that authentic creativity is more often found on streaming platforms these days. Using the hit movie Stree, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, as an illustration, he highlighted how the industry has been inundated with horror-comedy films, as producers attempt to emulate its successful formula.
In a chat with The Indian Express, Randeep Hooda explained that the film industry often follows trends. He stated, “This can be simplified as ‘copycat approach’. If one thing is successful, then more of the same begin to be produced. Everyone wants to make what’s already been successful. Now, after Stree, horror-comedy films are being made.
In his role as an actor, he thinks this method shouldn’t control artistic decisions and emphasized the persistent issue in Bollywood, which is fueled by various factors.
As an ardent movie enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the growing trend of formulas in our beloved film industry. It seems like we’re more focused on execution, ensuring every scene fits neatly into a predefined pattern, rather than embracing the artistry and creativity that is at the heart of filmmaking. The industry appears to have drifted away from originality, confining itself to a narrow box that stifles innovative experimentation.
Randeep stated that while there are worries about Bollywood’s repetitiveness, he remains optimistic about OTT platforms, which continue to offer room for creativity. Yet, he admits that these streaming services are also starting to focus on commercial success, as they strive for increased viewership and subscriber numbers.
Eager to push limits, he expressed his ambition to break the mold by finding harmony between innovation and familiarity in storytelling. He aims to touch upon themes that strike a chord with many, while also dabbling in unconventional narrative styles.
Randeep Hooda additionally discussed the distinctive storytelling methods of South Indian filmmakers, commending their skill in crafting narratives steeped in rich cultural traditions and fully-fleshed characters. He observed that these stories often maintain a strong connection to their heritage, emphasizing universal human feelings that strike a chord with a wide range of viewers.
Discussing the success of current blockbuster movies, Randeep noted that grandiose dialogues and commercial aspects, which were traditionally associated with Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, are experiencing a powerful resurgence in Southern cinema through characters such as Pushpa, who maintain their strength and defiance.
Randeep Hooda noted that South Indian filmmakers are now producing the type of movies that used to be Bollywood’s strong suit, but with a focus on compelling narratives and well-developed, authentic characters. He highlighted the appeal of characters like Pushpa, who possess an unpolished charm, in contrast to many Bollywood leads who often prioritize physical perfection over nuanced performances.
