‘Ransom Canyon’ Fans Must Watch This Intense Western Drama ‘Damnation’

Netflix has just introduced its new Western drama titled “Ransom Canyon“. Starring Josh Duhamel, this romantic series offers all 10 episodes of the first season for viewers to enjoy at their leisure. If you were captivated by the romance and conflicts set in the Texas Hill Country, then your next binge-worthy Western drama is waiting: “Damnation“.

In this movie, I find myself playing the role of a mysterious preacher named Seth Davenport, who transforms from a man of God into a leader of the local strike in a quiet Iowa town. As the tension escalates among the residents, I rally them against a group of wealthy businessmen dominating our resources. However, when a detective hired to put an end to our struggle results in a lethal conflict, my destiny and past become entangled with this dangerous figure known as the strikebreaker. While I strive to offer hope to my townsfolk, my future hangs in the balance as I confront the demons of my own past.

‘Damnation’ Is a Western Drama That Fights for Legacy

Similar to Ransom Canyon, Damnation offers a gripping portrayal of a community’s struggle for its own preservation. When greedy bankers and affluent industrialists conspire to seize control over their town’s resources, the locals fiercely defend their farms and the traditions that define their way of life. Like any great Western, this battle is depicted as righteous and seemingly impossible to win. It’s a timeless David vs. Goliath tale where the united community stands tall against overwhelming adversity. Damnation is an emotional journey that highlights the importance of camaraderie and mutual support. Set against the backdrop of the 1930s farmer’s strike in Plymouth County, Iowa, Damnation beautifully captures the spirit and tenacity of everyday people battling for their rights.

As a cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about a captivating series that Tony Tost, known for his work on “Poker Face” and “Longmire”, has created and executive produced. Conceived during his time on A&E’s popular neo-Western crime drama, “Longmire”, this project was more than just a job to him – it was a labor of love, as he described it as “one-third Clint Eastwood, one-third John Steinbeck, and one-third James Ellroy.”

In an interview with the Fayetteville Flyer, Tost elaborated further. He explained that this series takes familiar characters from a typical Western setting and drops them into the world of “The Grapes of Wrath”. It then places these characters in a narrative reminiscent of the paranoid pulp found in Ellroy’s novels.

At the heart of the struggle are Seth Davenport (Killian Scott, from “Secret Invasion”) and Creeley Turner (Logan Marshall-Green, known for “The O.C.”). These two men, with a tangled past, stand as the most ardent protectors of opposing factions in the landowners’ dispute. Although the conflict between farmers and corporations forms the basis of the show, the vengeful and passionate confrontation between Seth and Creeley provides a close-up perspective on the human toll this fight exacts.

Where to Watch ‘Damnation’

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve been eagerly waiting to stream “Damnation” but unfortunately, it’s not accessible on any streaming platforms at the moment. However, if you’re keen on watching it, you can purchase each episode for $1.99 or the full season starting at $16.99, available on YouTube, Apple TV, Fandango, and Amazon Prime. Unfortunately, owning it on DVD is not an option right now. So, for those who wish to immerse themselves in this highly-acclaimed series, you might have to make do with the temporary ownership of the licensing rights (as long as they’re available). The series has garnered a 92% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers praising it as “wild,” “fantastic,” and one of the best period television series.

Back in November 2017, I first stumbled upon the captivating series “Damnation” – a joint production between USA Network and Netflix. Unfortunately, after just one season, it was abruptly taken off the air. This unexpected cancellation did have a silver lining though, making the show a perfect choice for binge-watching. With 10 episodes, each approximately 40 minutes long, you could easily finish the entire series in a single day without putting too much strain on your streaming finger.

Apart from Scott, the series “Damnation” features Sarah Jones, who you might recognize from “For All Mankind,” Chasten Harmon known for her role in “The Good Fight,” Melinda Page Hamilton from “Devious Maids,” Joe Adler, a familiar face from “The Mentalist,” and Christopher Heyerdahl, who appeared in “Twilight.” You can purchase “Damnation” on Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV+, YouTube, or Fandango.
