As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours racing virtual D-Types and XKSSs, I can’t help but feel my heart pounding at the sight of this 1957 Jaguar XKSS up for auction by RM Sotheby’s. With only 16 of these beauties in existence, it’s a chance to own a piece of automotive history that few have had the privilege to touch.
RM Sotheby’s is presenting a scarcely found piece of Jaguar lore, a 1957 Jaguar XKSS. Given that only 16 of these models are believed to be in existence, the XKSS represents one of the most sought-after road-going Jaguars, embodying the essence of Jaguar’s D-Type racing heritage.
As I, a passionate gamer, stand before this beauty up for auction, the legendary chassis XKD 540, it boasts an illustrious past that sets it apart. Originally born as a “Short Nose” D-Type, it was metamorphosed into XKSS configuration at Jaguar’s workshop in 1958, a transformation orchestrated by its then-owner, the renowned hill climber Phil Scragg. This makeover included significant upgrades such as a full-height windscreen, a passenger door, and a boost in speed due to an upgraded 3.8L engine from the original 3.4L.
Not only does the XKD 540 car stand out for its unique features, but it also boasts an impressive racing pedigree that’s well-chronicled. After making its first appearance in the United Kingdom, this vehicle was transported to Australia in 1962 and took part in competitions under Laurie O’Neill and later Colin Hyams, a renowned racer. Throughout its history, it has been owned by several respected individuals, participating in racing events in both the UK and Australia before reaching the illustrious Mille Miglia Storica.
The XKSS car, meticulously taken care of by Jaguar experts such as Pearsons Engineering and CKL Developments, has been both restored and kept in excellent condition. It still boasts several original parts, including its unique matching-numbers monocoque chassis and front sub-frame. Additionally, this vehicle comes with an extensive collection of spare parts, ranging from headlights to wheels, enhancing its worth even more.
On November 2, 2024, the scarcely found XKSS will be available at RM Sotheby’s London auction, with an expected value ranging up to $14,500,000 USD. Witness the XKSS in motion by watching the video below, as Chris Harris navigates it through the streets of London.
