Rare Donkey Kong Creator Claims Redesign Was “Done By Real Artists”

A significant number of Nintendo enthusiasts are displeased with the latest revamp of Donkey Kong‘s design. To the artist who crafted the legendary Rare DK image, the updated version seems more authentic, as if it were created by true artisans, in contrast to his original creations.

Through social media platforms, Kevin Bayliss, a previous character artist and designer from Rare who contributed to Donkey Kong, Killer Instinct, Battletoads, and Star Fox, voiced his thoughts regarding the latest Donkey Kong character design.

In response to a comment praising the new DK for being highly expressive, Bayliss countered by saying, “This is because this time, real artists were behind its creation,” using Donkey Kong Bananza’s graphics as an illustration.

Absolutely, people who were familiar with it tried to convey their affection for the classic design that Nintendo kept employing long after its first introduction. Bayliss elaborated by saying he had to adapt to using fresh software at the time, picking up skills as he went along while working on KI and later applying those lessons to DK.

Regardless of personal opinions about the new design, even longtime fans of Rare are pleased that Nintendo is revamping the appearance of one of their most renowned characters, given its recent spike in popularity.

During the initial release period of the Switch 2, if there’s a scarcity of fresh Mario and Zelda titles in the mainline series, Donkey Kong Barrel Blast could potentially become a significant game that attracts many buyers for the system.

The gameplay appears quite bold, featuring numerous breakable surroundings that align perfectly with Donkey Kong’s disorderly character who attempts to resolve each predicament with a single powerful punch.

Without a doubt, Mario Kart World stands out as the top game attracting many buyers. In this game, Donkey Kong sports his latest design. If you’re still feeling nostalgic about the previous art style, remember that the original creator of DK is fond of this fresh take on his character.
