As a dedicated gamer and avid consumer of sci-fi and fantasy content, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the latest episode of Apple TV+ series “Sunny.” The show’s unique blend of comedy, drama, mystery, and sci-fi elements is unlike anything I’ve seen before. Rashida Jones, who plays the lead role of Susie, beautifully encapsulates this complexity in her description of the show as a “dark, humorous fairy tale set in near-future Japan.”
Today, the third episode of Apple TV+’s intriguing series “Sunny,” starring Rashida Jones as Susie, a widow uncovering her late husband’s secrets through a gifted robot named Sunny, premiered on Apple TV+. New episodes will be released weekly until September 4, 2024. The genre of “Sunny” is challenging to define, as it combines elements of Japanese and American influences, comedy and thriller tones, and sci-fi and drama aspects.
As a gamer, I can tell you it’s a complex tale, full of twists and turns. Picture this: a darkly humorous journey set in the not-so-distant future Japan. I’m the protagonist, a woman grappling with loss and grief. Suddenly, I’m left with this robot – think of it as an unexpected companion, almost like a thrust-upon ally. Together, we embark on a quest to unravel the mystery behind my husband’s true identity and the reason for these relentless pursuits.
The essence lies in both the solitude and sorrow, as you brought up, as well as the potential for human connection. This could manifest through people forming bonds with one another, or robots facilitating or hindering such connections. Ultimately, it’s about exploring what it means to be human in the context of these relationships.

Rashida Jones Explains Her Character’s Journey in Sunny
Jones expressed poetically how people often seem to attract the lessons they require for personal growth and recovery, as she described her character’s challenging journey towards self-improvement.
Susie escaped from her reality to explore deeper into her solitude, intending to travel to Japan. However, upon arrival, she encountered a man who had experienced extreme seclusion, known as hikikomori. This encounter disrupted her idealized notion of loneliness, as she had romanticized his suffering. It became clear that this man was not a cure for her solitude but rather a deviation from the path she believed was her only option.
In the opening of “Sunny,” Jones explained, the thing that once saved and gave meaning to the protagonist’s life has vanished, leaving her uncertain of her identity. After her husband’s disappearance, she had immersed herself in a romantic ideal, but now faces this reality’s harshness again. Faced with this lesson, she must learn to trust others, even robots, to help uncover the truth about her husband’s past and possibly reconnect with people in unexpected ways.
