Raymond Pettibon's Punk Legacy Goes Under the Hammer

As a dedicated fan of Raymond Pettibon, who has followed his dark, sardonic style since my days of mohawks and leather jackets, I can’t contain my excitement over the upcoming auction, “Raymond Pettibon: The Punk Years.” Having been born in the same era as these iconic pieces, it feels like a piece of my youth is being given a new life.

Enthusiasts of Raymond Pettibon’s work have an exceptional opportunity to obtain pieces from his legendary punk-era collection at a significantly reduced price. The upcoming auction, “Raymond Pettibon: The Punk Years,” taking place on August 22 at Wright in Chicago, as reported by Artnet, offers more than 300 items from the collection of ex-MoMA curator David Platzker. Items such as flyers, posters, and other scarcely sold ephemera will be up for grabs at this event.

During the late ’70s and early ’80s in L.A., Platzker began amassing various items while he was still in high school, as he later curated several exhibitions featuring them at his gallery, Specific Object. Notably, Pettibon, who is renowned for his somber and sarcastic artistic style, played a significant role in the visual aspect of California’s punk movement, designing artwork for bands such as Black Flag and the Dead Kennedys.

As a longtime fan of Black Flag and punk music, I am thrilled to learn about this upcoming auction that offers a range of items related to one of my favorite bands. From the coveted skate deck for their iconic “Loose Nut” album from 1985, estimated at $2,000 USD to $3,000 USD, to more affordable treasures like Black Flag cassettes and vintage vinyl priced between $50 USD to $100 USD, there’s something for every enthusiast. With 73 bidders already in play and a week left until the auction concludes, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation as I imagine myself potentially scoring a piece of punk history. As someone who has followed Black Flag since their early days, this is an opportunity I don’t want to miss out on!
