Typically, Alan Ritchson stands out as the largest character in the show Reacher. But that’s not so this season. In Reacher Season 3, the main character will encounter a colossal henchman named Paulie, and it appears that Ritchson squared off against his 7’2″ co-star during filming. Interestingly, Ritchson shared a story about taking a punch from him, and it’s reminiscent of the larger-than-life energy from his role in Road House.
Before we get into this Road House comparison, first you need to read Ritchson’s description of fighting his huge co-star Olivier Richters. In the book-to-screen adaption of Lee Child’s Persuader, Reacher has to face off against the gargantuan guy Paulie, and in the show, Richters plays that character. During an interview with Eammon Jacobs, Ritchson opened up about pulling these massive fights off with a massive co-star, explaining:
Absolutely, we’ve definitely had our fair share of difficulties. In fact, there was an instance where I unintentionally got hit myself, and I realized that I wouldn’t fancy engaging in a genuine fight with this individual. He’s quite formidable indeed. Yes, he’s quite a force to be reckoned with, my friend.
It’s safe to say that getting hit by someone as big as that could be just as painful, if not more so, compared to being slammed into walls – an experience the Fast X actor has had. Additionally, it’s important to note that Reacher’s leading man stands at 6’3″, whereas Richters towers at 7’2″. That’s a significant height difference, making the thought of him receiving a punch from his co-star all the more daunting.
I’d like to discuss the film “Road House” today. For those who might not recall, when this remake (which you can stream with an Amazon Prime subscription) was released last year, there were rumors circulating about Jake Gyllenhaal allegedly being hit by Conor McGregor during filming. This incident alone invites comparisons to be made.
Despite the fact that McGregor and Richters have built their careers on physical strength (with McGregor being an MMA fighter and Richters a bodybuilder), it might come as a surprise that Ritchson and Gyllenhaal were the ones who delivered hits to them in that particular scene.
In the movie “Road House”, it proved successful, and the actor who played Reacher is hoping the same goes for his upcoming series. As he put it:
“Success was ours in ‘Road House’, and I’m praying that fortune will favor us again with this new project.
If you’re familiar with Jack Reacher’s books and “Persuader”, it seems clear that he’ll likely meet his match in this battle, and there appears to be no viable escape route for him. Filming such intense fights requires a significant investment – in this case, three weeks for one specific fight sequence – our aim is to create a similar emotional response in the TV audience.
Alan Ritchson noted that his fellow actor dedicated four months to training for the fight scenes, and it seems that effort has resulted in a significant payoff. Expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming season of Reacher, the main star hinted at what’s coming: “I can’t wait for you all to see it!
However, I found it incredibly enjoyable, and I must admit, nothing quite compares to this experience during the last two seasons of Reacher.
Looks like we’re all set for a thrilling journey as Reacher Season 3 debuts on Amazon Prime Video this coming Thursday, the 20th of February!
In simple terms, you can expect some incredible battles, and Alan Ritchson’s character will face his most formidable opponent yet. It seems that every moment of this encounter will be thrilling, so it would be a pity to miss any part of it.
