Warning: Spoilers for Reacher Season 3, Episodes 1-3.
The character Jack Reacher, portrayed by Alan Ritchson, is back for a third season on Prime Video, and just like before, he finds himself in more trouble. As usual, Reacher proves to be a helpful soul yet again, as within the first few moments of Season 3, he rescues Richard Beck (Johnny Berchtold), a college student, from an attempted kidnapping. It’s almost as if he has a knack for being in the right place at the right time for these kinds of situations. Isn’t it strange how often that happens?
As a cinephile, I found myself in an unexpected predicament when, while rescuing Richard, Reacher unfortunately took down an officer – a move that felt out of character for him. It left me with a gnawing suspicion that something was amiss. After all, Reacher isn’t the type to slip up like this, and he certainly wouldn’t vanish without a trace over such an incident. The whole situation was so grave, and his subsequent response seemed uncharacteristically subdued. It now appears I missed a crucial piece of the puzzle regarding what truly transpired, but for now, let’s set that aside.
Upon arriving at the Beck compound, Reacher discovers that instead of just being repaid for saving Richard’s life, he is now expected to work for Zachary Beck and his suspicious business operations. A series of tests are imposed on him to verify if he harbors any hidden intentions. Even though Reacher saved Richard, it doesn’t automatically mean that Beck trusts him – at least not immediately.
Before being led to a room where he’d reside for an undetermined period, it’s clear that he successfully completes the mentioned tests first. He then discreetly retrieves a hidden phone from his boot’s heel and makes a call, saying “I’m in.” This is followed by an impressive, satisfying reveal of the title screen. How wrong I was to suspect Reacher could be involved in such a questionable act.
In a twist that rivals any other in the series so far, it’s apparent that events are unfolding exactly as Reacher anticipated. The simultaneous release of the first three episodes of Season 3 hints that this season of Reacher could surpass all others in quality.
Reacher Is Working With DEA Agents
But Of Course the DEA Doesn’t Know About It
It transpired that the kidnapping attempt on Richard at the beginning of Season 3 was orchestrated by Reacher and some DEA agents. In reality, he didn’t kill a police officer; it was a setup. When Reacher started investigating an old enemy named Francis Xavier Quinn, his activities came to the attention of Agent Susan Duffy. Upon further investigation, Reacher and the DEA agents found their objectives overlapping. Consequently, they concocted a scheme that placed Reacher squarely within Beck’s operation.
In one of Duffy’s investigations, Teresa (Storm Steenson) has gone missing, and Reacher is assigned to locate her while gathering details about Quinn and his business with Beck. As is often the case, their actions fall beyond the scope of the DEA. Quite unexpected, isn’t it? With no other backup available except for each other, this doesn’t deter Reacher as he’s never been hindered by such limitations before. Why should that change now?
Beck Isn’t the Real Villain of ‘Reacher’ Season 3
And He Might Actually Be Protecting Teresa
Although Beck seems to be the leading figure, it’s Julius McCabe who’s truly pulling the strings behind the scenes. There’s speculation that McCabe could potentially be Quinn if Duffy’s theories hold water, but for now, he remains an enigmatic character. However, he has effectively taken over the operations of Beck’s rug business to serve his own questionable purposes. For all intents and purposes, McCabe is running the show, dictating even where Richard attended college. While Beck may give off an aura of control, it’s actually McCabe who holds the reins in their lives.
In reality, McCabe orchestrated Richard’s initial abduction as a strategy to seize Beck’s business. As we delve deeper into Beck’s character, it becomes apparent that he may not be the typical adversary Reacher usually confronts. Although Teresa has vanished while working for Beck, I suspect that he might be safeguarding her because he’s not the main antagonist in this situation.
Typically, informants who survive are rare, as they tend to meet an untimely end soon after being caught. Yet, Teresa remains alive, suggesting that her continued existence may be connected to some underlying reason. I fervently hope this is true because I’m rooting for Anthony Michael Hall’s character to play a complex antagonist role.
Reacher Becomes Beck’s New Right-Hand Man
Now Reacher Has Access to More Information
In a turn of events, Reacher could have potentially saved Richard’s life, yet this didn’t guarantee him immediate acceptance into Beck’s inner circle. Consequently, Reacher strategically formulated a plan to advance his position and eliminate Beck’s trusted ally, Chapman Duke (Donald Sales). He skillfully orchestrated a sham attack at a distance from the compound, resulting in Chapman’s demise. It was made to seem as though Angel Doll (Manuel Rodriguez-Saenz) was behind the entire incident. With Chapman and another key player out of the game, and Beck accepting Reacher’s story, the third episode of the season finds Reacher precisely where he wants to be.
The only tasks remaining are locating Teresa, apprehending Quinn, and identifying the mysterious McCabe. Seems like plain sailing, doesn’t it? The latest season of Reacher is now streaming on Prime Video, with new episodes being released every Thursday.
