In a short while, the 2019 hit horror film, Ready or Not, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett who also brought us Scream, will have a sequel. The official title is Ready or Not: Here I Come, a clever reference to the original’s hide-and-seek game. Samara Weaving, who played Grace, one of the most impressive “final girls” in recent memory, will return for this new installment. Guy Busick will again handle screenwriting along with R. Christopher Murphy, and he shared significant details about the sequel, stating that it continues immediately where the first movie ends.
These days, Busick finds himself quite occupied. Lately, he has been involved in the writing crew for another significant follow-up titled “Final Destination Bloodlines”. Additionally, he is responsible for penning the upcoming Scream sequel, “Scream 7” (he collaborated on the 2022’s “Scream” and “Scream VI” with “Ready or Not” producer James Vanderbilt).
Yet, while conversing with Comic Book, he remains tight-lipped about Ghostface’s upcoming escapade. Instead, he shifted his focus towards Ready or Not 2, disclosing its starting point.
Grace finds herself in the hospital, with no sense of time having elapsed. The last thing she can recall is her in-laws suffering an explosion, along with her new husband. The shocking event left her drenched in blood. Stepping outside for a cigarette, emergency medical technicians and firefighters arrived on the scene. The narrative then resumes immediately from that point.
When she awakens, it seems as if no moments have elapsed. She hasn’t comprehended any of it yet, and is abruptly plunged into a more puzzling, complex predicament that leaves her bewildered… and us initially perplexed as well. There’s an enigmatic sense of order to this chaos. Since she managed to endure the initial ordeal, something has been set off, causing a ripple effect throughout the world, disrupting its balance.
“There Is a Reason for This To Exist, That Isn’t Just To Do Another One”
In a previous conversation with his co-writer, Busick made it clear that they would not be remaking the first film. Instead, he expressed the challenge of creating something distinct yet still familiar, saying “How can we make it explode in a way that’s not even the same genre, but still resonates and shares the same DNA?” The humor will remain sharp, but Busick aims to expand on the world-building for a more expansive experience. A specific set piece they had envisioned since the beginning is now being brought to life exclusively for the sequel.
Ryan and I developed an idea and presented it to everyone. The response was overwhelmingly positive, as everyone felt there was a unique purpose for its existence beyond just creating another one. It’s massive, exciting, and somewhat peculiar. But what really stands out is our love for the character Grace and actress Samara Weaving, who brings her to life so perfectly. Her portrayal is truly iconic, and we are thrilled with the work she has done on this project. We can’t wait to collaborate with her again, as long as we can find a way to make it all fit together. When we came up with the idea, our reaction was, “Yes! More Sam, more Grace!” Working on this project has been incredibly rewarding for us.
Last week, Ryan and I made our way up to that location and returned yesterday. We deliberately went during that particular week because a significant set piece at the end of the movie has been on our minds for nearly six years. Intriguingly, we felt compelled to be present when they filmed it. That set is truly remarkable!
Lastly, Busick was questioned about a possible sequel for Abigail. Although Universal hasn’t shared plans to expand that universe, the writer expresses enthusiasm about revisiting the vampire sub-world: “Boy, I’d sure love to revisit that world! I really enjoyed that film. I think it’s quite unique. To clarify, I don’t want to reveal any specific ideas, but in the past, I presented one of the Universal executives with a concept for the next step. It’s no secret, but it revolves around Mr. Lazar, the father character.
