As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “I’ve just learned that Perry, the legendary donkey from Jerusalem who was the real-life model for Donkey in the Shrek movies starring Eddie Murphy, has passed away at 30 years old. Can’t believe it!
It was shared on social media platforms that the sad news concerning Pericles, who had been residing at Barron Park Donkeys, a community pasture located in Palo Alto, California since 1997, had been reported.

Motion model for Eddie Murphy’s Donkey in Shrek Dies at 30
With deep regret, we announce the passing of the extraordinary Perry, who has left an unfillable void among us. His health had been deteriorating due to a condition called laminitis, which unfortunately cannot be cured. Although it was the appropriate time for him to depart, it came far too soon for our comfort. In his final weeks, many hours were spent with him in the pasture, showering him with affection through petting, cradling, singing, and expressing our love for him. We feel fortunate to have known him and will cherish the memories forever. Arrangements for a memorial service honoring Perry will be shared soon.

1999 marked the start of Perry’s cinematic journey, as he unofficially earned his title during the production of the original film. This was when the team from DreamWorks Animation contractor Pacific Data Images visited his residence in Cornelis Bol Park to observe and study his movements for their work.
As reported by SFGATE, Perry received a payment of $75 for his role. Dr. Jenny Kiratli, his handler, noted to the outlet that it was clear Perry was in the movie due to his likeness. She marveled at how similar Perry’s actions were to the character Donkey, such as flipping his head when he’s upset like Shrek and the way he trots.
Eddie Murphy, who has been lending his voice to the character since the very beginning of the series over two decades ago, plans to reprise his role as Donkey in an upcoming fifth Shrek movie, scheduled for a grand cinema release on July 1, 2026. With the success of the Puss in Boots spinoffs, DreamWorks Animation is also developing a standalone film focusing on Donkey’s chatty antics.
