Meredith Grey, a character played by Ellen Pompeo, has been through numerous romantic encounters since her debut in the hospital setting of “Grey’s Anatomy” back in 2005. It’s likely that Pompeo didn’t think she’d need to discuss these storylines with her kids someday. However, that day has arrived as her eldest, Stella (15 years old), and Sienna (9 years old) are close behind. For now, Pompeo is delaying explaining at least one particular situation for as long as she can.
In Season 21 of “Grey’s Anatomy” airing in 2025, Meredith is expected to remain steadfastly devoted to Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman). This is simple enough to explain to her middle child, but Ellen Pompeo mentioned that while some of Sienna’s friends are beginning to tune in, it might still be too early for the 9-year-old to watch certain scenes involving her mother. Pompeo shared this with People magazine.
I’m still of the opinion that there’s a great deal of content unsuitable for 10-year-olds, and I won’t be discussing it. It’s not meant as criticism towards other parents, but I prefer not to address such questions because they make me uncomfortable due to my personal history with the situation. For instance, I don’t appreciate being asked something like, “Why are your underwear on the bulletin board?” at this moment in time.
Indeed, it’s crucial we remember the intricate romantic history between Meredith and Derek, which was characterized by its intensity even in earlier stages. While Meredith has moved past casual flings, her past relationships with Derek were often quite passionate. It’s worth mentioning that Derek was married when their relationship started, and in “Losing My Religion,” one of Grey’s Anatomy‘s standout episodes, they found themselves sneaking away from their respective dates (in this case, McDreamy’s wife Addison), leading to a heated argument that culminated in a passionate encounter.
In a subsequent event, Addison discovered Meredith’s panties, which had been left behind during their encounter, hidden among Meredith’s husband’s clothing. Feeling vengeful, Addison decided to publicly humiliate the secret lovers by prominently displaying the panties on the hospital’s notice board.
It seems reasonable for Ellen Pompeo to be apprehensive about allowing Sienna to watch that series, given its complex nature and potential challenges in explaining it to a pre-teen. Indeed, there are numerous scenes throughout the show that could cause concern.
Ellen Pompeo and Katherine Heigl discussed some cringe-worthy “Grey’s Anatomy” moments they’ve watched with their kids, notably Heigl’s character Izzie Stevens engaging in oral sex with the ghost of her deceased fiancé, Denny Duquette. Pompeo added that one of Shonda Rhimes’ famous monologues, Meredith’s “pick me, choose me, love me” speech, left her older daughter Stella wondering why Meredith was pleading with a man to be with her.
It’s quite amusing to imagine Ellen Pompeo needing to explain Meredith’s actions to her kids, and it brings back memories of those incredible early seasons that I’d love to revisit. If you’re interested in starting a rewatch, here’s a guide to help you get started from your preferred era of Grey’s Anatomy. The first 20 seasons are available for streaming with a Netflix subscription, while a Hulu subscription will give you access to every episode up until the Season 21 winter finale.
