Rebecca Romijn Was An X-Men OG, And Husband Jerry O’Connell Has A ‘Mystique Shelf’ Of Embarrassing Merch

As a fan with a deep appreciation for the X-Men universe, I can wholeheartedly say that Rebecca Romijn‘s portrayal of Mystique was nothing short of iconic. Her fierce action scenes and striking blue skin have left an indelible mark on the superhero genre, and it’s heartwarming to see the love and support from her husband, Jerry O’Connell.

Prior to Jennifer Lawrence assuming the role of the blue-skinned character in the X-Men prequels, Rebecca Romijn initially portrayed the original shapeshifter in the live-action X-Men movies. Not only did her appearances with those yellow contacts prove challenging, but her action scenes were impressive as she executed powerful kicks. To show his admiration for his wife’s mutant character, Romijn’s husband, Jerry O’Connell, has amassed a collection of cringe-worthy merchandise to display on what he calls the “Mystique shelf”.

Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell, known for his role in ‘Stand by Me’, have been married since 2007 and are parents to twin daughters. Although Romijn, once a prominent figure in Marvel as Mystique, only made an uncredited appearance in ‘X-Men: First Class’, she and her husband have continued their association with the superhero genre through animated movies like ‘The Death of Superman’ and ‘Reign of the Supermen’. Interestingly, O’Connell maintains a fondness for his wife’s iconic role, as he has a dedicated collection of Mystique merchandise, which Romijn, formerly an X-Men cast member, finds amusing.

At comic conventions, I hunt for rare and distinctive items featuring Mystique, the character my wife portrayed in X-Men. We accumulate these pieces and I proudly display them at home. It’s my personal collection, and while my wife might feel a bit shy about it, that shelf is all mine – dedicated to my love for Mystique.

It’s quite amusing to think about Jerry O’Connell owning a collection of merchandise from one of his wife’s famous characters, especially since it means a mini version of him could be found on a shelf in his very own home! If the actor from Star Trek: Lower Decks were to play with action figures depicting his wife’s mutant character, that would take things to an even more awkward level. My suggestion for the actress, who starred in The Punisher, is to hide those figurines away in a drawer when guests are around.

It’s not unexpected that Jerry O’Connell, a fan of Mystique, would show his devotion by dressing up as the shapeshifter at this year’s Comicpalooza. Rebecca Romijn playfully mentioned that it might be the last time she invites her husband to a convention. However, we all know that Rebecca Romijn, star of Ugly Betty, looked the best in the iconic blue costume.

Though Rebecca Romijn had a less than ideal encounter with director Brett Ratner on The Last Stand, she found playing Mystique to be a rewarding experience. In fact, the skilled actress admitted to appreciating the makeup process, which typically took between seven and nine hours. Much like her character was content with her blue skin, Romijn felt a sense of empowerment from embodying Mystique’s unique appearance, understanding that it was an essential aspect of her character. This leads me to hope that we might one day see the model return to this role in the future.

Jerry O’Connell openly expresses his pride in being married to Rebecca Romijn, the actress who brought Mystique to life in live action. He even has a dedicated shelf for Mystique memorabilia, including miniature figurines of Romijn. Though Romijn might feel slightly awkward about her husband’s collection, it undeniably showcases the strong support he offers her. You can witness Romijn as the powerful blue-skinned Mystique in her three X-Men movies, which are accessible on your Disney+ subscription.
