As a seasoned movie critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that “Red One” is a refreshing take on the action-adventure genre, with a delightful twist of Christmas cheer. The film manages to strike a perfect balance between high-octane action sequences and heartwarming family moments, making it an enjoyable watch for audiences of all ages.
On November 15, 2024, Amazon MGM Studio’s movie titled “Red One” made its premiere, marking an early start to the Christmas season. Originally slated for a December 2023 release on Amazon Prime Videos, the film was postponed by a year due to SAG-AFTRA strikes. Yet, as they say, every delay has its advantages; the new release date allowed “Red One” to have a global cinema debut as well.
In the movie titled “Red One“, an extraordinary cast featuring Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, and J. K. Simmons is assembled. The plot revolves around the abduction of Santa Claus. Characters Callum Drift (portrayed by Johnson), the chief of North Poles Enforcement Logistics and Fortification (ELF), and Jack O’Malley (played by Evans), a hacker and bounty hunter, form an unconventional alliance to retrieve Santa and save Christmas. This film takes audiences on a thrilling Christmas escapade, offering a blend of emotional depth and non-stop action, making it a significant addition to the growing Christmas action movie genre.
Who Is Grýla and Why Did She Kidnap Santa?
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, let me tell you that “Red One” isn’t your typical holiday flick, and Grýla is far from an ordinary antagonist. While she’s known as the winter witch, she’s also an ancient troll with the power to transform into various forms. In this rendition, Kiernan Shipka brings Grýla to life, a character who’s tired of the world around her. She’s disillusioned by society’s corruption and sees it as rotten to its core. Drawing parallels with Thanos, she believes that the only way to reestablish harmony is by eradicating everyone on Santa’s Naughty List once and for all.
Although Grýla’s observations about the world might hold some truth, her proposed solution is drastic. This winter witch captures Santa Claus in order to employ a magical snow globe known as ‘glaskafig.’ Whoever touches this artifact gets trapped within it. Given that the Naughty List is quite extensive, Grýla devises a plan to replicate the ‘glaskafig’ and utilize Santa’s sleigh to distribute these globes among the naughty children on the list, thus trapping them.
How Is Santa Rescued in ‘Red One?’
On Christmas Eve, Santa Claus, also known as Red One, is abducted moments after his head of security, Callum Drift, steps away. A group that appears to be a covert operations team storms the North Pole and swiftly takes Santa. The kidnapping causes pandemonium, and despite Callum repeatedly urging surveillance on Red One and even leaping from Santa’s balcony in an attempt to stop them, the heavily armored snowcat carrying Saint Nicholas manages to escape.
In the story, it turns out that Grýla, a masterful deceiver, has secretly been orchestrating events from beneath the North Pole, scheming to replicate the world’s globes. While Callum and hacker extraordinaire Jack O’Malley are initially unaware of this, they are reluctantly enlisted to aid in Santa’s rescue mission. This journey leads them to some of the most unusual locations such as Aruba, where they encounter a variety of bizarre creatures, including oversized, abnormally shaped snowmen.
In a twist of events, when Callum and Jack manage to locate Santa who had been kidnapped by Grýla, the rescue operation doesn’t go as planned. Instead of liberating Santa, Jack and his son Dylan find themselves imprisoned within one of Grýla’s enchanted snow globes. Fortunately, Callum and Zoe (Lucy Liu) arrive to save them, but in the commotion, Grýla slips away with her offspring and an unconscious Santa.
As the clock ticks towards Christmas, Callum and Jack are on a mission to save Santa himself, as his rescue is crucial. In their confrontation with Grýla, Santa remains unresponsive. Yet, an unlikely alliance forms, with Krampus – Santa’s long-lost brother (played by Kristofer Hivju) – joining the fray to thwart Grýla’s evil plan. With despair looming, Santa miraculously awakens and vanquishes Grýla. In this heartwarming tale, Christmas and Santa Claus are saved from impending doom thanks to teamwork, reconciled relationships, and a renewed understanding of each other’s worth – serving as a perfect embodiment of the true spirit of Christmas.
How Do Jack and Dylan Escape Their Snow Globes?
A significant thread running through “Red One” revolves around the complex father-son dynamic between Jack O’Malley and his son, Dylan. Their relationship is fraught with tension and strain, as Jack grapples with his role as a father. As a result, they maintain a cold and disconnected bond. However, Grýla cleverly exploits this relationship. Realizing that capturing Dylan would halt Jack and Callum’s chase after her, the winter witch dispatches one of her snow globes to Jack and another to Dylan.
I found myself grasping the snow globe prior to my father, assuming it was a present from Jack. Overjoyed, I called him over to show it off. Little did we know that upon touching the globe, I would be confined within its glass prison. Moved by compassion, Jack followed suit and ended up trapped alongside me in our magical snowy wonderland.
The heartfelt conversation between Jack and Dylan about their relationship, where they acknowledged and apologized for their past mistakes, led to a strengthening of their bond. This transformation allowed them to break free from their imprisonment as the magical globes shattered in response, no longer needing to keep them on Santa’s Naughty List.
Does Grýla Die at the End?
In a similar fashion to a movie centered around the CIA or Secret Service, “Red One” is brimming with thrilling action. It’s as if you’re watching a narrative about national security threats unfold on the big screen. The film is filled with advanced technology, massive screens displaying maps, intense combat sequences, and organizations boasting names straight out of an action movie. This makes it seem quite plausible that the character Grýla might face a dramatic end by the story’s conclusion.
Although the movie maintains its Christmas atmosphere and family-focused themes, it steers clear of any distressing events. In this version, Santa manages to overpower Grýla by charging into her, sending the antagonist tumbling into her own snow globes. Since Grýla has malicious intentions, she becomes trapped immediately. This ending leaves room for speculation about a potential sequel because Grýla is not killed off.
Despite its turmoil and tense connections, Red One ends on a positive note for everyone involved. Fostering the spirit of Christmas, relationships are reconciled, peace treaties are signed, antagonists are vanquished, and joy and goodness prevail. St. Nicholas disperses holiday cheer, Callum chooses not to retire, and everything seems perfect in the world once more.
