Approximately 2 and a half years after wrapping up production in 2022, the much-anticipated Red Sonja reboot is slated for release in 2025. After several years of delays, the project picked up steam in 2021 when Tasha Huo (known for “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft”) was hired to write the script and M. J. Bassett (“Silent Hill: Revelation”) came on board as director. In this adaptation, Matilda Lutz (“Revenge”) takes on the leading role that Brigitte Nielsen originally portrayed in the 1985 version.
Based on the announcement, the character Red Sonja is set for release in the UK towards the end of this year following Signature Entertainment securing the rights for the UK and Ireland. However, an official release date for the U.S. has not been determined yet. Excitedly, Begüm Kayacan Parodi from Signature Entertainment hints that Red Sonja will soon be making her debut worldwide, giving fans a chance to witness Lutz’s formidable heroine in action.
Signatures is interested in movies like Red Sonja – grand tales set within fantastical realms, yet executed with a commercial flair that grabs attention right away. We can’t wait to present Matilda Lutz’s character, the fierce swordswoman, to UK and Irish viewers later this year.
Red Sonja, the fiery character, entered the public eye in 1973, thanks to Marvel Comics and creators Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith. Her initial appearance was in issue #23 of Conan the Barbarian, followed by her own series. Eventually, she starred in a live-action film in 1985, where she was played by Brigitte Nielsen alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Lord Kalidor. Regrettably, the movie didn’t perform well at the box office, earning only $6.9 million against a production cost of $17.9 million. However, despite these poor reviews, Red Sonja has developed a cult following over the years, even though it has a low rating of 21% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 29% approval from fans.
What Can People Expect From the ‘Red Sonja’ Reboot?
Based on the popular comic book series, “Red Sonja” will trace the adventures of the barbarian huntress, who gathers an unconventional team of warriors to confront the wicked Emperor Draygan (Robert Sheehan) and his lethal consort, Dark Annisia (Wallis Day). Unlike its predecessors, this reboot intends to emphasize the power and empowerment of women.
Lutz shared with CBR last year, during the promotion of her role in Daisy Ridley’s film Magpie, that this project is a fresh tale. She appreciated its empowering nature towards women, something she found particularly appealing in the script. Interestingly, the launch of Red Sonja arrives at an opportune moment. Last year saw a surge in female-led films, with strong heroines taking center stage more than ever before, as evidenced by titles such as The Substance, Wicked, and A Quiet Place: Day One.
It’s yet uncertain if the new Red Sonja remake will outshine the 1985 film across all aspects, but it appears likely that it will generate revenue far beyond its initial $7 million budget. Further updates about the movie, such as a U.S. release date, will be shared when they become public. For now, the original can be rented or bought on various Video-On-Demand platforms.
