The iconic character Red Sonja, portrayed by Matilda Lutz, unveiled a fresh look as the franchise reboot gears up for an exciting overhaul. Deadline reports that Samuel Goldwyn Films has secured the U.S. distribution rights for the upcoming movie, scheduled to premiere in cinemas this year. Peter Goldwyn, the studio president, is confident that the revamped swords and sorcery tale, helmed by director M.J. Bassett, will meet the expectations of fans who are well-versed in Red Sonja’s rich comic book history and screen appearances.
It’s exciting for us to present Red Sonja to viewers nationwide! This iconic figure has a dedicated and enthusiastic following, and we’re optimistic that our movie will meet their expectations!
In the upcoming film, the well-known figure Goldwyn will be brought to life by actor Lutz. Moreover, the recent image of the Sword-Wielding She-Devil (as shown below) seems to perfectly capture her portrayal as the fiery-haired barbarian huntress. She is depicted in full attire, donning an outfit inspired by Sonja’s iconic bikini armor, complete with a gladiatorial skirt, metal shoulder pads, and arm cuffs. Additionally, she brandishes a sword that further enhances her image as the formidable adventurer who made her mark on popular culture in 1973 thanks to Marvel Comics creators Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith.
Tasha Huo penned the script for the fresh adaptation of Red Sonja, a character she’s familiar with as she previously worked as both showrunner and writer on Netflix’s Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. In this new venture, she has tailored a narrative around Red Sonja, with Lutz, Robert Sheehan (from The Umbrella Academy), Wallis Day (Batwoman), Martyn Ford (Those About to Die), Michael Bisping (Den of Thieves 2: Pantera), and Phillip Winchester (Strike Back) and Trevor Eve (Waking the Dead) rounding out the star-studded cast.
‘Red Sonja’ Has Received an R-Rating
As a fervent fan, I must say that the recent image release doesn’t hint at a domesticated take on the Red Sonja reboot. However, the official rating of R for “intense, gory violence” has put all speculations to rest. This upcoming film promises thrilling sword fights and action sequences led by our vengeful protagonist, who was previously portrayed by Brigitte Nielsen in 1985 alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. Contrasting the original, which focused more on comedic antics than brutal violence, this new adaptation will likely have a more mature tone, reflecting Lutz’s ambition to modernize the story and shift its focus away from the original’s male-centric perspective.
As a movie enthusiast, let me share my thoughts on the reimagined “Red Sonja”. While the original and comic book versions were undeniably male-centric, this new take is refreshingly empowering for women. The script brilliantly showcases strong female characters, which I found to be a delightful change of pace.
After more than a decade of development, the revival of “Red Sonja” began filming in 2022. This long journey has indeed been a tough struggle to bring it to the silver screen. But the fight doesn’t end there; the storyline of the new movie suggests that Red Sonja will need to wage survival battles and navigate through the blood-stained arenas of a tyrant’s empire. She will also gather an alliance of outcasts to regain her liberty, overthrow Dragan, and defeat his cruel wife, Dark Annisia.
