Nicole Kidman has achieved remarkable success in the film industry, starring in numerous blockbuster films and collecting an impressive array of awards. She’s often recognized by the Academy and could potentially be nominated again for her role in “Babygirl“. This movie has been recognized for acting awards five times and even won one. Unlike many other actors, Kidman hasn’t focused much on making sequels.
In more than 99 acting roles, Nicole Kidman has appeared in just one sequel, portraying Atlanna, the mother of DC’s Aquaman, in both the original ‘Aquaman’ film and its follow-up, ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’. Interestingly, there’s a character from her past she’d like to reprise. When asked by fellow actor Reese Witherspoon in an article for The Guardian if there was a role she’d consider revisiting, Kidman chose Grace, her character from the 2001 horror film ‘The Others’. Kidman expressed…
To be honest, it’s really Grace from “The Others” I long to revisit. This film often goes unnoticed, but her character was exceptional and left a lasting impression on me.
In a different scenario, I would’ve thought Nicole Kidman might bring up her Oscar-nominated character from “Moulin Rouge” or another beloved role she’d be interested in reprising. Naturally, one of Kidman’s most beloved roles as a witch in “Practical Magic” is set to return in a sequel.
The Others stands out as an unexpected selection due to its tendency to be underestimated, according to Nicole Kidman herself. In this movie, Kidman portrays the mother of two young, light-sensitive children residing in a centuries-old house during 1945. Due to their sensitivity, they are confined within a dimly lit dwelling. As strange occurrences and eerie supernatural events unfold around them, they all become increasingly frightened.
The film “The Others” is notably excellent and represents one of Nicole Kidman’s finest performances, despite not being a genre she often explores. Critics generally appreciated it, although it didn’t achieve blockbuster status at the box office. One major criticism was that it was released too close to “The Sixth Sense,” which may have affected its commercial success. Additionally, due to its own twist ending, some viewers unfairly compared it to “The Sixth Sense and perceived it as a copycat, but in reality, “The Others” stands on its own merit as an outstanding film.
Although The Others doesn’t necessarily require a follow-up, the plotline leaves room for the potential of one. Maybe an ambitious screenwriter will recognize this as a role Nicole Kidman might want to revisit and develop a concept around it. For those who haven’t seen The Others or wish to watch it again, you can stream it with a Shudder subscription.
