The “Legally Blonde” spin-off series titled “Elle” has commenced filming, and the original actress, Reese Witherspoon, has unveiled the first glimpse of the show. Announced in 2023, “Elle” is a prequel series that delves into Elle Woods’ life during her high school years before she attends Harvard Law as depicted in “Legally Blonde.” Witherspoon, who portrayed Elle Woods initially in 2001, serves as the producer for the project, with Lexi Minetree assuming the role for the prequel series produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
Reese Witherspoon recently unveiled the initial snapshot of the Amazon Prime Video show titled “Elle” on Instagram. The picture features Lexi Mintree as Elle Wood, adorning the character’s iconic pink attire on a pink bed, while clutching a landline phone. This upcoming series is set to be a prequel. Witherspoon wrote alongside the post, “College was tough. High school was even tougher. Production for our new show, ‘Elle’, is now underway!” Here’s the picture below:
Is ‘Elle’ the ‘Legally Blonde’ Continuation Fans Want?
Reese Witherspoon is overseeing the production of “Elle” through her company Hello Sunshine, with Laura Kittrell and Caroline Dries taking on the roles of series showrunners. Kittrell previously worked as a writer and producer on the popular series “Insecure,” while Dries is recognized for her work on shows like “Smallville,” “Batwoman,” and “The Vampire Diaries” on The CW. June Diane Raphael and Tom Everett Scott have been confirmed to portray Elle’s parents, Eva and Wyatt Woods.
Red, White and Blonde, may now be filled by another project. In 2018, it was announced that Reese Witherspoon would reprise her character Elle Wood, with a potential release date in May 2020; however, production never commenced. The movie was not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic delays as other films were during the same summer. In 2020, Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor were reportedly working on a new script for Legally Blonde 3, but no updates have been shared since then.
As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that initially, the idea of a show titled ‘Elle‘ seemed a bit peculiar. After all, ‘Legally Blonde‘ served as its foundation and played a pivotal role in transforming Elle Woods’ character. The brief snippets we saw of Elle at the start of ‘Legally Blonde‘ didn’t exactly scream “prequel series.” However, Reese Witherspoon herself has hinted that the new show was inspired by the Netflix series ‘Wednesday‘, and it isn’t hard to spot some similarities with the prequel spin-off of ‘The Big Bang Theory‘, ‘Young Sheldon‘.
In 2022, when Amazon acquired MGM Studios, there were rumors that they were keen on expanding the studio’s catalog for franchise extensions. Although ‘Legally Blonde‘ might not have been the first choice, the original film’s impressive box office success and enduring cultural impact demonstrated its continued relevance. It will be intriguing to see if viewers warm up to ‘Elle‘, or if they are still yearning for a third installment of ‘Legally Blonde‘.
