Right now, we’re on the verge of hearing from Nintendo about the Nintendo Switch 2, the eagerly awaited successor to their top-selling hybrid gaming device. So far, details about the new console are scant, with only rumors and leaks to go by. However, it’s clear that Nintendo intends for this next console to be their finest yet.
As the Direct ends, it’s evident that attention will fully transition towards the Nintendo Switch 2. With time, the assistance provided to the initial Switch may gradually lessen – a regrettable development for gamers who have enjoyed over nine years of unique gaming experiences on this console.
Today’s festivities carry a mix of joy and nostalgia for the pioneering Nintendo Switch. In recognition of its lasting impact, let’s reminisce about some unforgettable experiences this versatile console has provided throughout its lifespan.
Docked Mode for the First Time
For the initial time, I experienced Docked Mode. The flawless shift between Portable and Television mode left me utterly astonished. Frankly, I didn’t anticipate it to switch so gracefully without any glitches or delays. Gaming Breath of the Wild on my TV was a breeze, but then being able to easily remove the console from the dock to continue playing in my room was an unexpected luxury that I had never realized I desired.
That incident served as a lesson for me to handle my Joy-Cons more carefully. Inadvertently, I placed one in the incorrect slot, which might have caused discomfort or damage to my newly purchased Nintendo Switch V1.
Breath of the Wild Release

The Nintendo Switch debuted with “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” as a launch title, which many consider one of their wisest moves. This game brilliantly demonstrated the console’s capabilities, straining its graphics, speed, and battery life to their maximum. Witnessing Link awaken in the Shrine of Resurrection and standing atop a hill overlooking Hyrule Castle was an awe-inspiring experience that left me hopeful for the quality of future Switch games.
Joy-Con Drift
Oh, the persistent issue of Joy-Con drift, a problem that has troubled numerous Nintendo Switch users for some time now. It was like a conundrum – while some players experienced it, others did not. Yet, it seemed as though each individual case, it appeared isolated. However, social media was filled with complaints about the unpredictable Joy-Con analog sticks. Even after calibration, the issue persisted, causing characters in games like Breath of the Wild and Super Smash Bros. to move on their own or fall unexpectedly.

The Pandemic Surge
The pandemic proved to be an extremely challenging ordeal, lasting for quite some time. Many people found refuge and tranquility within their homes during this difficult chapter. Fortunately, the Nintendo Switch offered a temporary respite for those confined to isolation. Games such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Breath of the Wild served as ideal diversions from the events unfolding in history.

As a gaming enthusiast, I found myself not alone in my circle as many friends, some who didn’t even consider themselves gamers beforehand, jumped on the bandwagon and purchased a Nintendo Switch. It was almost like an everyday escape for us all. And guess what? Sales of this versatile console soared during that period, which, if I may say, wasn’t all that surprising!
The Nintendo Directs

As a dedicated Nintendo enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on the moment when E3 was called off. Instead of returning to the bustling convention halls, Nintendo fully immersed themselves in the Direct format, opting for regular live streams every quarter instead. Although they had dabbled with this approach before, it wasn’t until then that it became their main stage for unveiling new games. Each Nintendo Direct became an eagerly awaited tradition, with fans speculating about upcoming releases and creating reaction videos, a practice now sadly remembered in light of the passing of Etika.
Of course, there were moments of disappointment as well. The absence of Hollow Knight: Silksong or long-awaited remasters like The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess often left us yearning for more. But the anticipation and excitement always seemed to outweigh those occasional letdowns.
Sakurai Events for Smash
A notable feature that resonated during the Switch period, even among those not into Super Smash Bros., was Masahiro Sakurai’s live broadcasts revealing upcoming fighters for the game. These revelations marked significant milestones in the console’s timeline, amassing tens of millions of views and countless reactive videos online. From Kazuya of Tekken to Sora of Kingdom Hearts, each new character added was a unifying event for gaming enthusiasts worldwide.

Here’s hoping we see more of this during Switch 2’s lifespan.
The Switch Lite
Nintendo leveraged the popularity of the Nintendo Switch by launching various console versions. The Nintendo Switch Lite provided a complete gaming experience, eliminating the hybrid feature, making it a budget-friendly choice for newcomers or those mainly using it in handheld mode. However, it was reported to have a higher susceptibility to Joy Con drift, and there was no quick fix as the analog stick issue seemed to be permanently stuck on the device itself.

Following the feedback regarding the smaller screen of the initial Nintendo Switch model, Nintendo introduced the Nintendo Switch OLED. Despite no alterations in the Joy-Con controllers (some of which had issues with drifting, while others did not), it offered an enhanced display size as an improvement.
Remasters and Remakes
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but appreciate the Nintendo Switch as my personal portal back to cherished classics. Games that had been languishing in obscurity for years found new life through remasters and reimaginings. A standout example is Metroid Prime Remastered, a game that was seemingly trapped within the confines of the GameCube for far too long. Another remarkable resurrection was Xenoblade Chronicles X, finally breaking free from the Wii U’s peripheral shadow.
An increasing number of remastered games appeared on the console, with classics such as Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and the Zelda series title, Link’s Awakening, among them.
As the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 approaches, it’s evident that Nintendo has no intention of slowing down their production of remastered and remade games. It’s possible that fan favorites like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess could finally be reimagined for the upcoming console.

Although it’s hard for me to admit, it seems that the start of something new could potentially mark the decline for the first Nintendo Switch. While it will still receive updates and share cross-generational compatibility with upcoming titles, the rising prominence of the Switch 2’s advanced hardware might lead to the creation of games specifically designed for the newer console.
This signifies the conclusion of an epoch for Switch 1 users, but this change was well overdue. Over the ups and downs experienced in the gaming sector, the Nintendo Switch has proven to be a remarkable journey.
